a few dealerships are no better. I've one stealership claim my rim was leaking air. I had a tire place check for a 2nd opinion & it was just a small hole in the tire.
Another time the service guy said my car is a high performance piece of machine which I should buy a warranty that extends for another 2 yrs. I asked how much...he said $4500. He then gave a speech how a blown transmission can cost 10k this & that blah blah blah.

The following week, I brought the car to my regular mechanic (who wasn't open the day I went to STS) and he checked it out. The STS in Amityville did something similar... I had a problem with something in my exhaust system. The guy tried to scare me into thinking I had an at least $1500 major job ahead of me, etc etc etc. Again, brought it to my guy. A $175 job.
As for Mavis? I've known of 2 people who've gone there to replace ONE tire and they tried to convince them that they should replace all four tires.
I wouldn't send my worst enemy to either place.

I mentioned for oil changes only. Usually you're out of there fast and no hassle getting out without your wallet. For service, not too sure on STS, but Mavis is actually not bad in my experience.

I have changed my own oil too but only once. It's a PITA to do it without a lift because you have to lay down in your driveway and use a car jack then if your arms are not long enough to reach the damn oil filter it can be a real hassle, so that's why I only did it once. My husband changes my oil for me. Find a reputable gas station/repair shop and not one of those chain places they tend to rip you off and Jiffy lube is the worst.

Both times I went to STS, it was for an oil change only. Of course, the crooks took it upon themselves to do an "inspection" and find all these non-existent problems. I will NEVER go there again.
As for Mavis, wouldn't go anywhere near them after hearing the same story about them from two different people at different times.

STS in Massapequa? That's weird. Did they put your car up on the lift? Were you able to watch them doing the oil change?
I'm no auto-expert, but I think pinhole(s) in a radiator is usually more serious than something you can just patch up.
Where do you get your oil changes now?

I don't see why they are all crooks because they try to upsell you. That's part of the business model. Just say no. I generally do fine by Jiffy Rube and always get coupons from $5 up to $12 off on their website or by email. I just say no to any "extras" they mention (although they once caught a broken rear wiper blade I didn't notice) and I still said no to them fixing it and picked one up from auto zone next door. Just keep an eye out to make sure they indeed put in a new filter and that's that. For $35 bucks to change my filter (which is in a real PITA spot), plus top off all fluids, dispose of the oil, vac the interior and give me a card for a free car wash next door, it's a bargain and a half compared to killing myself to do it and pay for the supplies.

Honestly, depending on tire wear, replacing 1 tire is a bad idea. Front wheel drive tires, the fronts should really be replaced at the same time.
Four wheel drive should be replaced at the same time.

It's called preying on the otherwise oblivious. If some soccer mom brings her Honda minivan in for an oil change and the tech says that her brake disc grease needed to be replaced and to not worry it'll only be 20/wheel and it save her and her family's lives, do you think she would normally know better?

Exactly. If you could have seen this theif at STS... unreal... tellling me all sorts of insane crap that I knew was completely wrong and made up but I kept encouraging him with a bewildered look and "really?" "oh wow...okay" and let him go on and on and on.
They love to take advantage of people who don't know any better and love to throw around terms that would confuse the average individual (male or female)
