Is it the case that just about all of these burglaries have been on the east side of town. Don't know if I've heard of any either in the Estates or Western sections?

whoa whoa whoa, that sounds hard. it's a lot easier to suckle on gov't milk and blame crime on perceived injustices and steal from people who have too much according to even our own president.

They must focus on getting a good education, a job, etc. No more stupid crap like "learning is for White people". No learning is for EVERYONE. They need to respect themselves as human beings. They need to take responsibility for their own actions and to keep their community safe. They need to be self sufficient in terms of income so we don't have another 3 generations on welfare.

I do believe most of them are towards the East side, but one article does cite Salisbury Ave (I believe they are referring to the one off of Nassau Blvd) which is towards the west side. But this is simply because the east side is closer to Hempstead, and an African American/Latino most likely cannot be seen walking through Garden City without being harassed by police (I've seen it happen, it's sad, but true).

Most of these were on streets bordering Hempstead....Garden, Meadow, First, Hilton. Then there were the ones on Salisbury and Stewart (hard to say where without the physical addresses, but neither is really dangerously close to Hempstead).
There were a couple of car break-ins this week in the estates section. A few years ago there were a bunch of daylight break-ins in the western section.
The economy is crap and people in GC still think they are living in Mayberry. We used to go out and leave our doors unlocked all the time. It's not that hard to get into a house in GC because so many people who live there grew up there and still have that mid-20th century mindset. Half the people with alarm signs in their yards don't even have alarms and the other half probably don't use them. The GC Police have been begging people to set their alarms. My next door neighbor used to go on vacation and tell us if we needed to borrow anything, just go ahead in and take it.
You don't need a wall, moat or electric fence, you need to the citizens of the village to start using some common sense.

I don't find Garden City to be unsafe, but it probably has more crime than the north shore towns. GC is more centrally located and has better train service, and that means that even criminals find it more convenient. These are facts and I don't think anyone is disputing them.
The police department in GC is excellent and many burglaries have been thwarted by the regular use (not just installation) of a home alarm.

People say this about GC train service (and I know the LIRR well) and I don't really agree. Express trains from Manhasset to Penn are under 1 hour and you avoid the dreaded combination of changing at Jamaica/or waiting for your connecting train at Jamaica as the Port Wash line doesn't go through Jamaica. GC/Nassau Blvd/Stewart Manor on the Hempstead line takes 40-50 minutes vs. 28-30ish from Manhasset.
Merillon Ave (GC) is on the Main Line but doesn't get express service like Mineola does.
The only disadvantage of the Port Wash line is if you work downtown you cannot get a train to Atlantic Terminal. But you still have to take the subway from Atlantic to Wall St, just like taking the train from Penn to Wall. Port Wash can also have some service issues during severe weather.

There have been several burglaries in Garden City this year. The police just arrested two men in connection with those burglaries. I just read in the Garden City Patch that there have been additional burglaries since then on Roxbury, Meadbrook, Kildare and Wyatt, Westminster and Meadow St. Unfortunately no part of GC is immune. Will I continue to live in GC? You bet. The pros of living in this community outweigh the cons.

Believe it or not, some of the burglaries in the Estates section were committed by GC youth. In one case, a group of high school students were told by their friend that the parents were away and so they decided to pilfer some stuff. Parents came back and prosecuted. Good for them. Teaches the spoiled kids a lesson.
By the way, I think alarm systems are a bit over-rated. If you have a yard sign, that helps a lot...even without the system. But, to me, the biggest deterrent is lighting. Get some motion sensor lights around the house and light it up. Makes it a lot more difficult for the burglar.
