Thinking about purchasing a Prius for my commute. It would be be from exit 53 to Grand Central exit. Any thoughts or comments about HOV would be appreciated. Is it overrated, or does it truly save you time.

Thanks in advance.

Be sure you get the sticker or else it will be a very expensive ticket for you.

It depends. Sometimes you can speed right through all the traffic on it, and other times it is just as slow as the other lanes. Personally, I don't think the ability to use the HOV lane is worth much, but it's not the only reason to purchase such a vehicle.

I have a short commute (Exit 40 to 32) on the LIE but the HOV Lane usually makes the trip about 5 - 10 minutes faster during heavy traffic.

It also depends on the time you're on the road. Once the complete cluster starts after 7:45am the HOV can get jammed up. The worst is when a mini school bus or two will get in the lane and go 54mph for 20 exits.
I am on my second Prius, I love everything about the car. Currently averaging 51 mpg, not too shabby.

where are you using the grand central to? LGA The HOV is overrated after exit 32 your pretty much screwed completely. You are better off with LIRR to woodside yes fast buses are there to take you elsewhere But I can't know if I don't know where you use grand central.

Yes, the HOV lane reduces commute time. That's why it exists and that's why single occupancy cars are ticketed every day for using it. Is this a trick question?

The HOV lane is good except when you get someone who isnt driving fast enough. I always maintain 55mph in the HOV lane.

54 is a safer bet.

55 MPH? Really? I do 65 or so and at times there are drivers in the adjacent left lane whizzing by.
