Las vegas is on our list of places to live if and when we move off LI, Arizona is another place I'd like to live.

You have to be real, so can you show us the real numbers? Your savings has been depleted by $3k, but i'm assuming you've spent all the income earned from your job/retirement/rental/etc, which is how much now???

Stop it troll....there's not a single person in history that has left the island and actually enjoyed life somewhere else. It defies all logic. I'll have more respect for you if you tell the truth....it sucks there.

The couple of sheckles or avocados your're saving can't compare to life on the Island......just playin

Glad your're doing well, nice to hear. Enjoy!

P.S. Vegas is the only place that would that would have turned out to be a net negative, I can't stay away from the casinos and in the long run the house never loses.

We moved here six months ago. I put $45000 in the bank as an initial deposit. We are renting for one-half the amount we paid in Hampton Bays and we have a renter in the house we own as well. The move went smoothly and nothing was damaged/missing. We did not unpack everything, because we thought we were going to buy a home in the first year. After much research, I have determined that this market is being seriously controlled by the banks, who have a huge foreclosure inventory. They are trickling it out on the market. On any given day there are 2000 houses for sale and 5000 buyers. There are bidding wars for every property sold that artificially raises the price paid for the property. The winning bidders are almost always all cash, avoiding a need for appraisal. They would not appraise anywhere near the winning bid, so the banks choose the 'all cash' buyer. They have effectively created a seller's market in spite of the glut of foreclosures. There are people in Las Vegas who are still living in their homes and have not paid the bank anything in two years. This is okay with the bank because if they foreclose they would have to worry about vandalism/squatters and placing another home on the market. So anybody buying today is probably paying 30-40% too much.

We dine out weekly. There is almost always a coupon or great sale involved. It is always reasonable (except on the Strip). Go out with friends who retired here years ago.

We go to the shooting range every two weeks ($7). I attended a free Muzzle-loading class there. Anna and I have CCW permits. She owns a .380 Sig Sauer semiautomatic, I own a .40 S + W Sig Sauer semiauto and a Charter Arms Revolver. We also bought a huge gun safe to insure they are not stolen while we are out of the house.

Every two weeks we get massages (one hour is $32). There is a School of Massage in Las Vegas, students perform the massages.

We bought outdoor furniture, living room furniture a wide-screen Plasma TV, Bed, Mattress and Bureaus. Bought a Tacoma 4X4 for exploring desert backroads.

Joined the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (went to parks to see Transit of Venus and the Annular eclipse) & bought a new telescope.

Joined the Nevada Striper Club (Striped Bass are in Lake Mead).

Joined the Gold Searches of Southern Nevada & the LV chapter of the Gold Prospecters Association of America. Camped out on one of their claims in Arizona and, yes, found gold. Here is a fun fact. These four regions are the top gold producing regions in the world: China, South Africa, Australia & Nevada!!

Anna and I got motorcycle licenses and fishing licenses.

Bought a bunch of camping equipment and fishing equipment.

We attended gun shows, outdoor trade shows, coin shows, comedy shows and concerts. Saw Santana, Lily Tomlin, a Pink Floyd Cover Band, Martin Short, Sylvia Brown, Rich Little, Norm Macdonald. Coming up: Paula Poundstone, Kathy Griffin, Lewis Black, Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon & Bill Maher. Joined two organizations that supply free tickets to some shows.

Took trips to Great National, State and local parks. Will go camping at Zion NP in September. No lack of beauty out here.

Major trips scheduled to Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora Nov 27th -Dec 6th. Also 4 days of Salmon and Halibut fishing in Alaska May 23rd-May 27th, 2013.

We do very little gambling.

Cost of living out here is LOW. After six months and all the stuff that we bought, that checking account is at $42,000. That is how low the cost of living (and living-it-up) is out here.
Why did you post this on the Long Island NY forum instead of the Nevada forum? I don't think people looking to relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada (who would find this informative and helpful) will be perusing the LI, NY forum. Just a thought ...

Wanted to show you that the cost of living is significantly lower off Long Island. It was not for people who are looking to relocate to LI. It was meant for all of my former forumites who live on Long Island.

kayo_michael- I am retired. From all sources for my wife and I $7400/month

$7,400*6+$3,000=$47,400

I'd be livin' large on LI if I brought home that much! in 6 months, too.

NYS pensions allow you to live anywhere in style with the taxpayers of NY footing the bill.

From afar you still want to play my nemesis. Okay, but you are just jealous, like you always were of the "sweeter" deal given to the teachers that have to deal with your spoiled kids!!

You are wrong on two counts
Many places where I can't live in style; and
NYSTRS is footing a part of that income from dividends on their investments (no direct taxpayer input, in spite of what you may think) Goodbye forever, I love LI butt!
