They had the last house on right (dead end) on Flushing Road deep in the woods. I remember it was a steep hill. The best times of my life were spent here. We called it, "the country." What made it special was that if you went to the end of the property in the backyard, you would come out to what we called the clearing, which was a natural sand road. This sand road went for miles. There were many hills and trails connected to it all surrounded by a thick forest. You can indeed get lost in these woods and there were no homes for miles around. My friends and cousins would wake up early and take this sand road or clearing right to the beach, about a two or three mile walk, where we would fish all morning then hike back to the house with a bunch of fish to clean. I also remember that when we got to the clearing and turned right to a circular, hilly path about a mile deep into the woods, we came accross something amazing. A single giant boulder in the middle of the woods the size of a two story house. It had to be left over from the iceage. We would climb up and make a camp fire on top. Everyone in Sound Beach called it "Big Rock" I was wondering if anyone who has lived in Sound Beach or the Rocky Point area for thirty or forty years remember the area I described or especially remember Big Rock? I would love to take my children and show them that awesome sight. Another thing, can you still get lost in the woods where I described, or did urban spread destroy this amazing place? I hope it's the same. Sorry this went long. As you see, I live in the past. I would love to retire there. Please get back to me, Jamie
Great post!

I moved to SB about 2 years ago...pretty close to where you are speaking about. We live on lower rocky Point Rd. The only thing we didn't think about was moving onto a road with a double yellow line...too much traffic. Otherwise its a great place to live.

I think this is where you are talking about...

flushing road sound beach ny - Google Maps

there are some newer big houses on Westchester Drive, but they back up to the hill you are talking about.

Funny you should mention the boulder. In the far back corner of our yard is a huge hunk of granite about 15 ft across. I've seen 4-5 others around also. We live right on top of the terminal moraine from the glacier. Its pretty cool to be less than 1000 ft from LI sound and 180 feet above it!

Thank You,Westchester Drive used to be that clearing (sand road) I was talking about that went a couple of miles towards the beach! Wow, it's gone. Part of my past is gone!!! How sad. I wonder what year they put that road in? Had to be in the 1980s or later.

Sounds like Coram in the makings. It seems like more and more places are getting welfare cases. How much do these lazy people get per week?
