I am thinking of moving back to Long Island for family reasons but after reading these posts I am getting scared off! Are there any good reasons to return?

Maybe for the joy of leaving again.
Personally if I had to move back I'd treat it like I was moving anywhere, very carefully. I'd also look at if moving back was the best way to handle a family issue or is there another option.

As with any web discussion board posters are more apt to complain than praise. I wouldn't read much into anything except for maybe giving you some insight into particular neighborhoods or school districts that you might want to research further. Long Island has many millions of residents, many of whom are happy and not even aware this site exists. I am very happy with things, although there are always areas that the local community can improve. That is true for most regions. Good luck to you.

It is a dreary, mall ridden dump, whatever charm it once had is gone.
And it never had any for me at all.

Officially, perhaps.
Unofficially, there are at least three office buildings in Hicksville that are all at least half empty.

My girlfriend and I are a young couple. We are moving to North Carolina next month. We both hate Long Island. It's too crowded. I've been reading this forum and haven't seen anyone mention the "Broadwater Plan" yet. They are putting a 21 mile floating gas line in Long Island Sound. This Island is for the very rich and the very poor. You can only afford to live here if you are on government aid or you are old money and living off the backs of your dead relatives. It's too crowded, pollution, illegal immigration, crime and taxes just multiply every single year like everyone has more then enough money. We want to start a family, but we are going to be doing it in North Carolina and going there next month. Wanted to leave this place for years. I'm only able to do it because I am cashing out my annuity. Just to get out of here. Good-Bye LI

Let me defend Long Island. Long Island is beautiful and I love its diversity. Long Island offers excellent entertainment, beautiful houses, excellent schools, amazing beaches, and access to the city. I see Long Island in my long term future.

I loved long island but you will like NC alot I dont anyone who has moved there who doesnt like it infact lots from Miami are now going there.
NC reminds me of old long island add horses and warm weather and its NC.
Ofcourse you have busy built up areas like anywhere else .
I am looking at NC myself as want to leave Miami and have friends in NC all like it . I loved long island but tired of the cold, ice, snow
Its slower than long island and no such thing as 24 hour a day supermarkets, etc but thats no big deal

I moved to Miami not long ago from long island I agree long island is great but if someone wants it bit more quite, laid back than time to leave
I hated the cold and the last 2 foot snow storm was it for me other than that I loved it.
The beaches there are sewers compared to Florida lol but I agree with everything else you stated.
Great people ,excellent schools and access to the city while still being great suburbs . The long island railroad for those who use that instead of driving to city is fantastic.
I understand now why those who can afford it go there for Spring,Summer and than head to warmer climate come fall, winter.
I used to go to a gym in your area of hempstead called Valencias early am as it was on the way to work.
