We had a rather mild winter last year -- an alligator would have survived.

HowStuffWorks "Alligator Hibernation"

Quote:
Alligators can even survive freezing conditions. They have been known to rise to the surface if the water is about to freeze, with their nostrils above the surface. This allows them to breathe through the ice as it forms. In extreme cases, they get frozen into the surface of the pond for several days and then swim free when the ice melts. See this page for details.
Many states consider alligators to be exotic animals and either ban them all together or require permits.

The problem is when they get bigger and hungry. Aside from preying on critters, pets, etc., once large enough they will go after small humans. While they look like the slog about, they are pretty fast off the line when going after prey.

true but when the weather gets cold to the point where water freezes, they cant survive. I mentioned this a while ago that my brother had a friend that was an animal lover and his brother would mail baby gators from florida and he would keep them until they got too big and he would release them in corunes lake in massapequa. he said he would come back and see the gators frozen in the ice. it made the news back then but now it seems that everyone has them now and letting them go.

Evolution. Gators are now found in the wild as far north as Virginia. An alligator does have the ability to hibernate, sort of. Scientists are stating that in the somewhat near future gators could adapt to the climates of the north east. While the average gator could probably not survive the entire winter of say LI, an average gator certainly could, and has, easily survived freezing temps for long periods of time. They have also stated that it is quite possible that in rare occurrences certain gators may be able to survive a mild winter in the northeast. A number of factors fall into play here, such as location, available shelter and food sources. So, to simplify things, lets say you let 20 gators loose in the wild here, maybe 1 would survive the entire winter.

It is absolutely sick and cruel to let these gators loose here, no different than any other type of animal abuse. I love gators, they are magnificent creatures that deserve nothing but respect and these jerk offs abandoning them here need a real good beating.

WE need Crocodiles, not alligators...

We should also keep them in all those rivers you people want to save, then when ducks and birds from other areas fly in and ***** out seeds from other areas the alligators eat them and no more invasive plants clogging and killing the rivers and lakes...

More alligators and Crocodiles.....

Crocs would not survive here. The American Alligator has a shot.
I think we should re-introduce bears, wolves, and coyotes.
Rattlesnakes may be on the comeback here as we speak, there have been unverified reports of rattlesnake sightings in the remote areas of the pinebarrens. Not too sure what to make of that though, whether a small population survived all these years or if some knucklehead let them loose(just like the jackass who let the gators go). Stranger things have happened, they thought the Tasmanian tiger was extinct and now they believe they might actually still be around.

Growing up, friends who lived near Zorns would often relate stories about the chickens which broke out and would run about through the neighborhood.

I am wondering if these gators aren't escaping local restaurants in order to not meet the same fate?
