I work on LI about 60 miles east of the city. There is nothing going on outside and as far as I know(as of 2 minutes ago) my office is open. To tell the truth I don't see why not. There is nothing really going on outside.
Nothing other than high winds, slick roads, etc.... You may think "nothing is going on" now but what about later?? Have fun. Hope you don't kill anyone on your way home!
Ok, "morons, imbeciles and jerks" - maybe a bit strong?
Believe it or not, some of us actually care and love what we do for a living, as rare as it may be. Others may have other motives.
Stony Brook University is closed (no classes), but I will go in tomorrow, conditions permitting, since there are a number of things to take care of. A lot of our equipment is not on emergency power, so I have to preempt losing stuff due to power outage at the university. Similarly, small business owners probably are not thrilled to have a day (or days) off...
No, I don't think it's a bit strong. You may "love" your job --- I wonder how you'd feel if, because of the "love" of your job, you killed someone in an accident getting to your job when you should not have been on the road in the first place?
The ONLY people who should be on the road in hurricane, blizzard, or other hazardous conditions are: Police, Fire, EMTs, Doctors/Nurse, Hospital support staff, crews from utility companies. Other than that? STAY OUT OF THE WAY AND STAY HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't want anyone to put their life in danger - but I hope that Jim's Smoke Shop and the local liquor store are open. I mean - those business owners that provide CRUCIAL goods in an emergency of this magnitude should make every effort to get to work today!

During blizzards, hurricanes, and other unsafe conditions, people should stay home unless they are providing a truly essential and urgent service. If you are busy at work, then work more overtime later in the week or work on a weekend or holiday. The roads should be saved for the people who really need them. How would you feel if you were driving to work during a hurricane or blizzard, for no reason other than thinking it would enhance your career or you don't want to work overtime another day, and you got into a car accident that killed an emergency room nurse who was providing an urgent service, who absolutely needed to be on the road that day?
Like I said, the company I work for, smartly, is closed tomorrow (Monday, Oct. 29). They did not close during any of the blizzards in 2010 or 2011 (or any other year since I've been there). I hope that none of the jerks that I work with decide to go to work anyway.

Yeah a carton of smokes and a fifth of booze sounds good to me right now LOL
