Why LIPA failed: Utility ignored warnings it wasn't ready for major storm (New York: appointed, lawyers)

If we had that "useless" nuclear power plant now we'd be much better off. Cheap power rather than paying for a hole in the ground.
Blame a lot of it on the moronic NIMBYs who were "afraid" of being hit by a nuclear "disaster" in our backyard.
Meanwhile the protesters were TOO STUPID to realize that Long Island was already directly in the affected zone for two other pre-existing operating nuclear power plants, Indian Point (NY) and Millstone (CT). So we are still affected anyway.
Also, the protesters were TOO STUPID to realize that, pre-1965, Brookhaven already had multiple research nuclear reactors at the Brookhaven National Laboratory -- right under their idiotic noses. Why didn't they scream for those to be shut down? OH NO. We're too stupid! Let's just shut down the one that could provide power for LI and pay through the nose for the privilege of doing so!
Millions of people = in the affected zone, but enjoying their power from Indian Point and Millstone.
Long Island = in the affected zone of 2 nuclear power plants that pre-exist Shoreham, enjoying NO power from Shoreham, PLUS paying for the "privilege" of Shoreham being built for 30 years (decommissioned in 1989; LI'ers paying until 2019).

On May 19, 1989, LILCO agreed not to operate the plant in a deal with the state under which most of the $6 billion cost of the unused plant was passed along to Long Island residents

Gotta sacrifice somewhere, eh? Because TOP PRIORITY is executive compensation, bonuses, benefits, free cars, plush pensions, gold-plated toilets in the top brass only washrooms, etc., for the EMPTY SUITS that run the place with NO OVERSIGHT AT ALL.
We have to get our power from someplace and unfortunately we don't have a giant dam. Modern reactor designs are immune to the old concerns of meltdown and other disasters, we just lack the will to build them because we still associate nuclear power with Chernobyl instead of a place like France, that has happily supplied 85% of its power needs with nuclear for decades without incident.
And you trust these guys to run a nuclear power plant? Think about THAT for a moment.
The people actually AT the plant were extremely professional, many experts in the field of nuclear power. I actually worked there on the specs when I was very young as a temp while they decommissioned the plant. It took until 1994 to fully decommission it. They ran an amazingly tight ship. Everything coming in had to be x-rayed, even a cup of coffee. Everyone going in had to be subjected to metal detectors and bomb sniffers (a couple of times ladies with stinky perfume set the bomb sniffers off). As a temp, I was not allowed to go ANYWHERE in the plant, even to the bathroom, without an escort. NOTE: the plant was not even operating at this time (I believe it actually only operated for one day and that was to test it), and the security was still so tight. The staff and management of the plant itself were very good.

This is the only thing LIPA had to do with it:
Quote:
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), headed by Richard Kessel, was created in 1986 specifically to buy the plant from LILCO (which it did in 1992) for one dollar.
Wind power would be the way to go here on LI. Plenty of wind from all directions and its free. New jobs would be created and it would be way cleaner and safer.
They tried, NIMBY'd because it'll "spoil the view".
Wind is nice but it doesn't provide baseline power for a grid. We need nuclear or some fancy moon tech.
Better come up with a good way to get the spent fuel rods off of Long Island and through NYC.
