On Nov. 2, during all the outages here in Commack I went to Meat Farms and purchased chicken with an expiration date of Nov. 5. to barbecue. When I unwrapped it, it smelled to high heaven. I brought it back and the manager gave me a **** and bull story about why it smelled. When I mentioned the possibililty of removing all the other wrapped chicken packages of the same date, he got very haughty with me and had a real arrogant attitude. I imagine that attiltude was a defensive one as he was probably embarassed and that is how he reacted. I mentioned this incident to a few people and they told me that this particular store was known to rewrap expired items and put new expiration dates on their food. I actually liked that store but now I can't even go in. Perhaps in the future I will be able to go in for fruits and vegetables but I don't imagine I wlll ever be able to buy their chicken or meat again.
Yeah...Im sure Consumer Affairs would do that for a persistent problem but lets face it...no one should be complaining about rotten chicken if they were stupid enough to buy it after a major storm and expect that a "expiration" date meant it was still ok.
Your first mistake was to buy meat that needed refrigeration after a widespread power failure.
Your second mistake was to buy chicken. Probably the worst item you could buy if there is no refrigeration.
This! A friend went looking all over for chicken a day or 2 after the storm and I told her she's nuts. In the week after the storm, she continually cooked meat dishes with chicken, hamburger, cube beef, etc. Unreal...

Lot's of Grocer's butcher counters relabel days old meat, the problem here is it was right after an extended power outage and the meat counters should have been cleared and cleaned with bleach. All of the meat stocked pre-storm should have been trashed. Many groceries in my area did just this.
Make a note to not visit Meat Farms....
