I have recently made a rather interesting observation... On Google Earth, look at both the northern and southern terminus of the Seaford-Oysterbay Expressway. It looks as if there are unused patches of land where the expressway would extend should it be lengthened. Are they seeking to extend the expressway? Or is it another one of Nassau's failed projects?

That road has been unfinished for a long time and is a state road, not county.

Some info about the multitude of proposals at the link above.

But what is the southern terminus of the expressway supposed to extend to?

I think it was to extend to the causeway to bring you to Long Beach.

We will probably never see a bridge or tunnel built over the sound in our lifetimes but it would be a great economic boost to the economies of long island and connecticut.

I believe it was originally planned to connect to Wantagh State Parkway. Think there may have also been proposals to take it all the way south to Ocean Parkway.

I remember back in the mid-70's there was a big controversy over building a cross-sound bridge that would have connected Sea-Oyster Bay to points north. The problem is the extension would have cut right through some very wealthy backyards as it cut through Syosset to Oyster Bay Cove/Laurel Hollow, Cove Neck, past Centre Island.

It's unfortunate because it would have really changed LI's economic trajectory.

i think what ultimately stopped it was a "gift" of land in the bridge's path donated to the federal government from the Town Of Oyster Bay for use as a wildlife preserve. This moved responsibility of the decision from the state to Washington. There was a provision that no encroachments could be made on the preserve without the land being returned to the town. I believe this is the reason waterfront residences in Bayville/OB are not permitted to have docks.
There was an informative exhibit on the failed attempt to build the bridge at the Planting Fields Arboretum years ago. It mentioned there was opposition on the Westchester side as well.
