Thanks, Sean.

Folks, if you compare the map of the villages and hamlets in the Town of Hempstead, that Sean was so kind to provide, with the postal zone ZIP Codes that service the Town of Hempstead, you'll be very surprised as to how many villages and hamlets or parts of villages and hamlets are in a postal zone ZIP Code with a different name than the name of the village or hamlet.

Especially for those residing in hamlets, far too many people believe that they reside in the community whose name is in their mailing address when they are actually in a differently named community than the community whose name is in their mailing address!

So those are all the "REAL" towns in Nassau, everything else is a neighborhood. If you missed it, the Suffolk County version was posted on a previous page.

Thanks again, Sean.

Folks, if you look at the map, you'll see that there are more villages (30) than hamlets (17) and that the villages (23,062 acres) account for 67% of the total area in the Town of Hempstead. The Town of Hempstead is the only town on LI where villages out number hamlets and are more than half the town (the Town of Riverhead in Suffolk County is the only town on LI where there are no villages in the town).

Sean, if it does not violate any prohibition against "cross-posting", do you think you can post these maps in two separate threads, "Maps of the villages and hamlets in the 3 towns of Nassau County" and "Maps of the villages and hamlets in the 10 towns of Suffolk County"?

I guess I could, like you said I dunno if that might be considered clogging up the boards too much.

In today's Newsday, there's a map showing these same borders (in relation to the subprime mortgage cover story).

As a current resident of Upton, I can assure you that there are people and even families living there. For a history of the area, you can check out the following link.

Camp Upton

Upton does have a census code of 76441.

It is a U6.

It also has its own US government Post Office. The post office is not a mail room for the lab, but an official branch of the USPS.

Yes, your house may have an "Upton, NY 11973" mailing address; but, as occurs in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the majority of places on LI have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located. In your case, your house is not in "Upton", because according to the Suffolk County Planing Department there is no "Upton", neither a village (municipal corporation) nor a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the Town of Brookhaven.

I think that those who refer to "Huntington Village" refer to the area in Huntington. A portion of NY Avenue (aka Route 110), New Street, and Main Street, with the great restaurants and shopping, not any specific legal term for a geographic area.

It's marketing, pure and simple.
