I was looking at some of my old house documents yesterday, left over from a refinancing last year, and discovered that the house was originally described as being part of "Huntington Plaza" a description I'd never heard before.

How old is the house? If it's newer than WWII, that's probably the name the developers gave to that area when it was built up, if older it's a long forgotten neighborhood name. Pretty much all suburban housing developments originally had names that have disappeared over time.

That must be it--the house and one next door were built in 1961 or '62. There's nothing even remotely resembling a plaza but then all those fancy developer names usually are a complete fantasy. Thanks.

For those who may not be familiar with West Sayville:

West Sayville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southeast part of the Town of Islip, in the south-central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of West Sayville in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north and the east by the Hamlet of Sayville; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Oakdale.

The Hamlet of West Sayville has a different border than does the "West Sayville, NY 11796" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "West Sayville, NY 11796" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of West Sayville and a place can be in the Hamlet of West Sayville and have other than a "West Sayville, NY 11796" mailing address): places that have a "West Sayville, NY 11796" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of West Sayville are in the Hamlet of Oakdale and in the Hamlet of Sayville; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of West Sayville that have an "Oakdale, NY 11769" and "Sayville, NY 11782" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

Some places have come by their names just colloquially such as Huntington Beach which is part of Centerport.

Haven't read this entire string but the Long Island District of the USPS has a 15 page or so internal document listing all the alternate names of towns in Nassau and Suffolk county.

My mailman and his carriers from East Norwich actually work out of the Syosset PO. Syosset has the list because they deliver to the villages of Muttontown, Oyster Bay Cove, and Laurel Hollow.
Muttontown is actually delivered by 5 post offices (Jericho, Syosset, East Norwich, Oyster Bay, and some other town).

The problem is caused by the self-same USPS because of its use of non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

This may be of some help to you in understanding the depth of the geographic confusions as a direct result of the USPS using non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones: http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...where-you.html

Places in the Village of Muttontown have a "Syosset, NY 11791", "Jericho, NY 11753", "Glen Head, NY 11545", "East Norwich, NY 11732" and "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" mailing address.

For those who may not be familiar with Muttontown:

Muttontown is a village (incorporated in 1931) in the central part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Muttontown in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Village of Upper Brookville and the Hamlet of East Norwich; on the east by the Hamlet of Syosset; on the south by the Hamlet of Jericho; and, on the west by the Village of Brookville and the Village of Upper Brookville.

Muttontown is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address: places in the Village of Muttontown have a "Syosset, NY 11791", "Jericho, NY 11753", "Glen Head, NY 11545", "East Norwich, NY 11732" and "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" mailing address.
