Plainedge is a hamlet, Herricks too. Those are the two that most people only know as school districts, though...since they don't have post offices....but they are really there and on official Nassau County maps, as opposed to places like South Setauket which don't officially exist at all.

Island Trees is only a school district, there is no Village nor Hamlet of Island Trees, and the Island Trees School District is entirely within the borders of the Hamlet of Levittown.

Levittown is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southeast part of Nassau County.

There are places that have a "Levittown, NY" mailing address that are in the Hamlet of Plainedge and there are places in the Hamlet of Levittown that have a "Bethpage, NY 11714", a "Wantagh, NY 11793" or a "Seaford, NY 11783" mailing address.

Levittown, along with the Hamlet of North Wantagh, once comprised the area known in Colonial times as Jerusalem.

Thanks Wally

I don't live out there, but I'm seriously doubting anyone refers to them by their "proper" names.

Here's some true fakes:

Biltmore Shores, Nassau Shores (Massapequa)
Mandalay (Wantagh)
Colony Bay (Baldwin Harbor)

And some real ones that don't have post offices:
Lakeview
Garden City Park
Stewart Manor
Terryville
Flower Hill
Munsey Park
Thomaston
Malverne Park-Oaks
South Hempstead
Thanks Sean

Plainedge is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet's name as part of their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Plainedge have a "Massapequa, NY 11758", a "Levittown, NY 11756", a "Bethpage, NY 11714", a "Seaford, NY 11783" or a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" mailing address.
As we were taught in Plainedge schools, Plainedge was named for it's location: the edge of the Hempstead Plains.

Another reason for using Plainedge was to differentiate it from Levittown & Bethpage, and -- another developer's trick like "South Setauket" -- also people associate Farmingdale with Suffolk County; developers didn't want prospective buyers from thinking that the homes were ' too far out east.'

Also: be very specific to use a North in front of Massapequa when writing about Plainedge. 11758 handles a very large area -- including Massapequa by the water. If you told someone who lives on Bayview Ave in Biltmore Shores that you're from Massapequa and live near the A&S Pork Store, they would be quick to remind you that you are from North Massapequa.

The subtle snobbery didn't end there. If you were from North Massapequa, south of the Southern State, you never said Plainedge, you said N Massapequa. To say Plainedge implied that you lived further north in tinier, Levitty-looking houses.

Strike the Village of the Branch from your list. It is an Inc Village, according to their website: http://www.villageofthebranch.net/ It goes back to 2/25/1927

Add Plainedge -- it's a geographical area.

Munsey Park is an Inc Village of 3000 residents http://www.munseypark.org/

Farmingdale is a village (incorporated in 1904) in the southeast part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east part of Nassau County (along the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line).

Farmingdale is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places that have the community's name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: there are places that have a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" mailing address that are in the Hamlet of South Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Plainedge in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County and in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Wyandanch in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County.

Many (and, that includes NEWSDAY) are very surprised when they find out that while the Village of Farmingdale is in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, the majority of places that have a "Farmingdale, NY" mailing address are in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale, Town of Babylon, Suffolk County.

Be careful pulling information off of Wikis -- they are generated by random users who may or may not have the full correct information. Such is the case with North Massapequa.

If you live or operate a business in North Massapequa, NY 11758, you use the North, or No. or N. before the Massapequa, NY 11758 portion of your address.

For example -- my HS -- Plainedge High School Click on the website and take note of the address. I lived within spitting distance of the school.

My home address was Miss OhBeeHave, #0 OhBeeHave Ave, North Massapequa, NY 11758. Mailings received from my old Senator in Albany for my scholastic achievements were also addressed to me as the above address -- North Massapequa.

The fire dept HQ: Contact Us

Perhaps you need some clothing from Marshalls? North Massapequa New York Marshalls Store - North Massapequa New York Clothing Stores

If you live in the Seaford portion of Plainedge schools, which is adjacent to North Massapequa, you are going to use Bob Jones 1 Wiki Ln, Seaford, NY 11783 -- a number of my friends had Seaford addresses and said they lived in Seaford.

My friends who attended Plainedge and lived south of Hempstead Tpke, N of Jerusalem and right by 135, wrote their addresses as Bobbette Jone 1 Wiki Ln, Farmingdale, NY 11735.

You're working under a false assumption that I rely on Wikipedia, I don't.

My main source is "Special Districts and Service Area" by the Nassau County Planning Commission, an 11" X 17" spiral bound publication that has maps showing the borders of communities, school districts, library districts, postal ZIP Codes, water districts, sanitary sewer districts, police districts, park districts, fire districts, etc., etc., etc.

Because people and firms use "North Massapequa, NY 11758" in their mailing address, does not make it correct.

No part of the Hamlet of Seaford is in the Town of Oyster Bay.

Seaford is a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the extreme southeast section of the Town of Hempstead, in the southeast part of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/Oyster Bay town line.

Seaford is one of those villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority* of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the hamlet: these places that have a "Seaford, NY 11783" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Seaford are in the Hamlet of North Wantagh and the Hamlet of Levittown in the Town of Hempstead and in the Hamlet of North Massapequa and the Hamlet of Plainedge in the Town of Oyster Bay.

* More than half the places (2,184 acres) with a "Seaford, NY 11783" mailing address (3,942 acres) are not in the Hamlet of Seaford (1,758 acres).
