Many of those houses may have already mitigated the noise with higher end windows and insulation.

If you think noise might be a problem why even consider the house in the first place.

Just guessing he/she wants to move to Syosset and the homes within earshot of the train are a bit less expensive.

Because all the condos on Long Island are occupied. Hopefully they will build more.

Syosset is on the Port Jefferson/Huntington Branch, which uses a mix of electric and diesel trains. Assuming you don't live near a train/road intersection, you shouldn't hear the electric trains too much-- its more of a light sound. With diesel trains, you may hear it more, and depending on your location, may feel a slight rumble (not sure that's the right word-- diesel trains make more of a heavy, not loud noise).
