Maybe...but I find that those that harken for the days of yester year when the island had great employment reference one company: Grumman. It wasn't like there were 150 other large conglomerations driving the american engine on long island at the time. Long Island is not that huge, and is on the wrong side of Manhattan. Aside from cost, business tax, etc, if you are on the western side of nyc, which jersey is, you can tap into much of PA, parts of NY (rockland, westchester, etc) much more easily, Delaware as a region, plus some of NYC with much more ease from a workforce standpoint as well as logistics. Even if the state and region improved the Empire Business Development options and the area calmed from a cost standpoint it would never be as appealing for as large a number of companies as Jersey or PA have become.
And I think everyone overstates the dearth of employers on the island: (not counting reputation, etc) Newsday, Cablevision, Motorola (formerly Symbol), CA, MSC Industrial, NBTY, North Fork/Capitol One, any name regional bank office, Estee Lauder, Arrow Electronics, Telephonics, OSI Pharma, Northrop/Grumman regional office (growing I might add), Canon USA, Esselte, Henry Schein, North Shore/LIJ system (huge), NPD, CMP Media, Pall, Leviton, Sbarro Corporate, Adecco, Honeywell...growing presence of Big 4 firms on the 110 corridor, 1-800 flowers corporate...is it really that bad?? How about all of the colleges, the county systems, town jobs, school district positions...
