I remember there was a troll attacking New York and Long Island in particular on some old thread (probably in general) and he claimed he lived IN Long Island for years before he left and never looked back.
As soon as I saw IN Long Island, I realized the guy was lying and he probably never stepped foot on the Island, LOL.
I've lived on Long Island pretty much my whole life, sans one year when I lived in Brooklyn...like I said, I usually say "on" but sometimes it sounds awkward so I'll use "in" instead

Technically, Brooklyn and Queens are both on Long Island (or in this case, is it "in"??) There aren't any bodies of water to cross to get from Brooklyn or Queens onto Long Island...you are already on LI in these two boros. That said, I don't know a soul from either Brooklyn or Queens who consider their home to be on Long Island.
