What an obnoxious post you have written. So insulting to teachers.
I hope they proof-read their PhD thesis' better than the 1st grade spelling and math handouts they send home. I'm getting tired of correcting their work with my paltry "flunked out of state university" education.

"People spend more than that on cigarettes." Yeah because cigarette usage is on the rise and highest in the US, good perspective

But if you're trying to indicate cigarettes are American products, Papa New Guinea and Rwanda are the largest producers of cigarettes now. Maybe you're not.

Most people don't spend $64 on American products, they rather go to Walmart to buy the high quality Chinese made stuff. But it's okay, we don't pay for it in taxes.
Let's review the statement:

How do you come across that as suggesting tobacco manufacture?
If people were to stop smoking cigarettes, save the money and buy American they would create American jobs.

Next time I visit Long Island...
So you're not even living here yet feel the stats you pull off a website are truly indicative of our property tax situation?

Quote:
People all over New York State complain about property taxes, even in Buffalo where they can be a whooping $2500. Kind of annoying if you ask me.
And yet you participate in such threads.

But hey good for you with the board meetings, after all the founding father's always said "no taxation with representation."
Somebody has to be heard. Too many out there twiddling complacently thinking someone else will do it.

I lived in DC and worked for some non-profits, no they're not all equal from my experience and the one's that are used by well-known news sources are generally better. But that doesn't mean you can't reference those non-profits, right?
"Generally" better. An opinion, not necessarily factual.

Yup, I took a chance. I like CNN, and their statistics matched the New York State government.
Your personal preference, but not necessarily the better option 100% of the time.

Well the big bad New York State and federal government likes to use the median, regardless if Long Beach and Glen Cove are outliers. Maybe this year they will actually use current data. Better yet, maybe they will use the average and mode to represent property taxes on Long Island.
And why not? Probably because they're still trying to remember the difference between median and mean. If they toss us a bone with the mode, they ought to give us the range, too.

Are you quite sure you know Martha's nuns? Or are you just randomly teacher-bashing?

I don't think he is "randomly teacher bashing." I think he is recounting his own personal experience with the written materials his kids are bringing home from school.

On the other hand, I believe the private sector is responsible for much of the economic recession (along with some poor federal/state economic politics) and needs to operate in a more ethical manner in order for it's employees to receive the appropriate pay and benefits they deserve. On the other hand, like I mentioned in the other post, I am bias and like the government model better where everyone gets an increase after a year or X number of years with good benefits- IMO the private sector should be obligated to operate that way, or at least if it's a large corporation. But of course that is not going to happen and some people would call that socialism utopia liberal.
You have a point with this. People working in the private sector ARE falling behind. However, that only makes it harder to deal with what's going on in the public sector financially. If you have less money to go around and no pension, you don't exactly appreciate paying the ever-increasing taxes for other people's raises and pensions.

There are countries where the private sector operates that way. Norway comes to mind. I think Norwegians have the shortest workweek in the world and they also have perks such as being able to take as much sick time as they want and only having to bring a doctor's note if they are out 3 days in a row. This is because middle class Norwegians do not vote against their own self-interests. They vote for the most employee-friendly politicians by a landslide ... the Socialist Party. We might have a much nicer life, but what would happen to our self-esteem as Americans if we started voting like "socialists" and "libs?"

Not random, I am directly bashing my son's 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade teachers who send home sloppy, unprofessional work. I like to correct it and send it back. Especially the 2nd grade teacher who has a PhD and speaks like she works at Walgreens. Sweet person, but I wouldn't hire her to work for me. Too careless. Not enough attention to detail. Unfortunately I have to tell my son (repeatedly), "take my word for it, that must be a typo, the correct spelling/sum is ______. Ask Mrs. Crabtree politely to double check."

Oh, I thought he was replying to Martha about the nuns. Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering if Mongoose knew all my teachers too! That would be quite something. Now I get it.

I know and see all. All knowing and all seeing. Can't even criticize a teacher's crappy work. It's "bashing." Spare me that self-righteous passive aggressive garbage. I pay them well, they can learn to use spell check like the average 6th grader. I don't turn in embarrassing work with poor spelling and mistakes. I'd get fired. Welcome to the real world. Not some tenure-ized fantasy world. Oh wait, it's real. I forgot.

Why am I participating in this thread then? Because I can. My nephew and niece live on Long Island and a few months ago I was taking care of them and I still visit them often. I'm happy with the schools, teachers, and education they're getting. I mean sure there are one or two bad teachers I came across, but the most part they are good. I didn't have a problem with teachers not using spell check or making frequent grammatical errors like other posters are mentioning. My brother never complains about the taxes, but I think after coming back from out west we just accepted the fact that high taxes are the staple of New York, yet people continue to fight for lower taxes. Teachers that I've encountered in PT conferences and pilates classes didn't come across to me as rich, but what do I know that is just my two cents.

Opinions are the backbone of CD.
