What's cool about Stony Brook?
I need a few interesting facts about the Stony Brook area for a conference flyer I am creating. I am not interested in SUNY Stony Brook, but rather interesting things to see and do in the Stony Brook area. Thanks very much.

Stony Brook has nice Museums, great shopping, wonderful Duck Pond surrounded by a village that looks something out of a Norman Rockwell painting.
Also home to some famous residents:
Stan Lee (creator Of Marvel Comics)
Kevin James (comedian, actor)
Joe Nathan (Minnesota Twins pitcher)
George Booth (New Yorker cartoonist)
R.A. The Rugged Man (hip-hop artist)
Brooke Ellison (First quadriplegic graduate from Harvard University)

Not a thing. While becoming overcrowded, like everywhere else, it's regressed(as has Port Jeff)

there is a small musuem in stony brook, there is a historical shopping village. I believe there is a church in Setauket(next town) that is one of the oldest on LI. there are a few beaches-public & private & a small "harbor". I'm sure there is a website for the village that would have good info.

Agree'd. Old Stony Brook is the more interesting part. Yes, Museum, shopping, the Stony Brook Marina with beaches. If your looking for some good info stop in the little strip mall to the right of the Post office. Theres a barber shop in there. The owners name is Sal. He's been there for a 1000 years. Its a good place to start. Good luck!

You're going to be hard-pressed to play up things to do in Stony Brook because it will take people about an 1.5 hours to exhaust all of their options there.
There are 3 strip shopping centers in "town". Actually there is no town per se, but what passes for town is an area Ward Melville restructured into the first strip shopping center in the US. The original contains a post office with a wooden eagle at the top that flaps at random times, some specialty stores including a middle of the road jewelry store, Chicos, Stony Brook Gift Shop, Brook House which is good for lunch, Crabtree and Evelyn, etc. The other two strip malls contain a Talbots, Van Heusen outlet, Ann Taylor outlet, and various other stores. Robinson's Tea Room is very good for lunch, as the chef is quite good - his desserts are homemade and I highly recommend them - they're not too sweet - he definitely knows what he's doing.
The shopping area is very picturesque, but only takes about 10 minutes to walk around, unless you're into store browsing.
About a block from all of this extensive shopping (just kidding) is a large duck pond which is also filled with lots of geese and a few swans.
There is a park called Avalon built by Jim Simon dedicated to his son, no longer living. It's a beautiful park that people can walk through - has trails, etc. This is at the back of the duck pond and the entrance is across the street from the Mill. There is no entry fee- it's entirely free to wander around, and in fact can take you into the edge of Head of the Harbor.
Across from this area is Stony Brook harbor - pretty, a small beach there and that's about it.
Hope this helps.

It will take longer then and hour and a half. At the duck pond theres a water mill there.Take that road up into Head of the Harbor!Theres some beautiful sites up there. A nature trail and breath taking views of the LI sound!
You can even lodge there. The Three Village Inn used to have Bungalo's to sleep in.
I did not know that about Ward Melville, though I attended the HS in Setauket.
