Family isn't moving so they stay thinking living near mom and dad is positive to there own family to struggle and have no life other than work and survive...
They want to move but can't afford to move because the island has them working to barely survive
I'll put my spin on this question -- "Reasons why I wish I could move back to LI..."
1. Good Italian food.
2. Spur of the moment trips to NYC (and all it has to offer).
3. SUMMERS and CHRISTMAS (no better place to be during these times of year).
4. The New England "feel" and scenery of the North Shore (native of Northport).
5. Fresh seafood.
6. Proximity to mountains, beaches, wineries, other metropolitan cities.
7. Friends and family (had to include that!).
8. The honesty of northerners (southern charm and manners are great, but definitely more "fakeness")
9. True 4 seasons -- miss the awesome foliage in fall, and miss the snow as well!
10. Multicultural aspects of city -- love walking down a street in NYC and being able to hear 3-4 different languages.
11. Eaton's Neck, LI. My sister currently lives there, and is my idea of the PERFECT place to live!
12. etc....
Fortunately, my career allows me to actually make MORE down south (sports medicine and rehab), so I can visit anytime as my schedule allows.
Unfortunately, I attempted to move back 4-5 years with 2 very good job offers, but after crunching the numbers (relocation expenses, the hit I would take on the sale of my current house because of the crappy economy/market, the cost of housing and property taxes up there), there was no way at all I could justify the move, it would have wiped out all of our savings, and the savings for the kids' college funds and our retirement would have a taken huge hit.
Given all of the problems I read about here on CD, it crushes me to see what is happening and where it all may end up. The current state of my native Northport is in jeopardy due to the Matinecock project for low income housing, which really distresses me (but that is a topic for another thread!).
Back to the original posting, I miss an incredible amount of things about LI, I just can't make it work for me and maintain the current lifestyle I have. I would never bash it, nor would I ever fault anyone for wanting to leave. It's a shame what the bureaucrats have done to that once wonderful place!
Summertime on LI, professional sports, distance from NYC, gambling, fishing, good paying jobs, good schools, small close knit towns, music scene, distance to skiing, be in the mountains in 2 hours, wineries, etc.
Always something to do, always!
That's why I like it.
Agree on summertime and distance from NYC and mountains. The rest...meh. Music scene?!? Are you serious?!?!?
I love being within hop, skip and a jump of great tunes.
Nothing beats being ocean front for some Buffet or Yankee Stadium for some Roger Waters. Not to mention all the acts in the city...the garden, Roseland, Nikkon, Terminal 5, RCMH, BB Kings. Etc.
My husband and I left LI because it was toooooo crowded, traffic unbelievable, and litter on the streets. But you want to know what?? We MADE money!!! The house was almost paid for, had good jobs, and oh did I say - we made money, and took great vacations.
Like idiots we wanted out of Long Island. We moved to boring Fort Myers, FL. Had to do a short sale because of a defective drywall product, and we don't get paid. This is a constant struggle.
By the way, we have no children.
Talk about being stuck!!!! If anyone is stuck, it's us. No money to get back to what we had. Maybe we should take up a collection.
Happened to 2 co-workers who left for the promised land Fl.
Luckily they left on good terms and the owner hired them back after coming in crying for their job back.
