For those with HDTVs for example, if I watch CNN HD or ESPN HD on channels 25 and channel 36, there is not much of a difference with channel 725 and 736 HD.
On the program guide info, it declares channel 25 and 36 as HD but so does it on 725 and 736.

there is no difference whatsoever. cable merged the channels a few months ago.

The only difference I have found is that UniversalHD-745 was never overlaid onto the 1-200 channels.

Technically, the "regular" channels (not the 700/800 versions) are SD. In the earlier days of HD programming, you had to go to the higher channels if you wanted the HD versions. For quite a while now (over a year), the HD boxes have become "smart enough" to give you the HD versions on the lower channels. If you have an SD box (do people still have those? ), the "regular" channels will be in SD.

This is of course much more convenient than the old way of having to know all those 700/800 channels and I imagine was done in large part due to all the people that went out and bought HDTVs, came home, and still used the old channel numbers and thought they were watching HDTV when it was still in SD. I've had to correct quite a few people when I came over to their house to watch a game or whatever, which was always eye-opening to the owners.

Of interest, if you use a CableCard to get your programming (e.g., if you have TiVo), you still need to use the 700/800 channels to get HD programming. This being because the mapping of SD channels to their HD counterparts is specific to Cablevision's boxes.

Oh, there is a difference, although not in the picture quality. With everything going HD, you can now only record a fraction of the 100 hours that Cablevision used to claim as the capacity on its DVRs. Although it's still kind of crude, I recommend adding DVRPlus, which is an additional $5 a month, and lets you record on Cablevision's own computers in addition to your DVR. It also allows you to watch the recorded program from any TV with a cable box. Still, it's a shame we have to keep adding to the monthly cost because the basic technology is deficient.

Verizon still has their HD channels in the 500's, which I find annoying and something they can fix.

With Verizons DVR's, we have dozens of programs and I've never gone above 60% capacity, where as with CV's boxes I used to have to delete on a daily basis to have any room. And my son records every single kids show.....I have to catch up on deleting them once a week or so, and that keeps me around 40% of capacity.

When CV was pitching me after I dumped them, they told me about their great new DVR's they were going to give to me free for a year...too bad they didn't tell me about them before I dumped them, because I just assumed their equipment sucks like everything else they do.

cv is supposed to be 300 hours of record time but since we had the hurricane, its been pushed back.

Buy a DVR expander external hard drive to increase the capacity for HD shows. a 1 TB drive bumps it to 100 hours.
