My husband and I have been searching for a house before the holidays. We have looked into many different neighborhoods in LI and have recently expanded into Garden City. We saw a property that we love , but the area is very close to Hempstead. After doing a research, there were some recent crimes around the area. Is it a huge concern that it's close to Hempstead? We really love it because the house is just perfect for us. Please advise.
I'm guessing the Meadow St area - yes there is a bit more crime around that area and the hesitation you feel about buying there will also be what happens when you sell. You're always going to take a hit on your price over there - so you'll pay less to buy and you'll get less on the other end. We bought our first house in GC in 1997 and went thru the same thought process, and it went on for years before that and will go on that way forever, or until the 'Stead gets cleaned up.
Is it truly dangerous? I'd say not - the GC police do a good job patrolling the area.
Thank you for your response. What made you decide and go with GC? This house we saw is perfect for us. It's the humble home we have always been looking for. My husband and I are also not looking to move for the next 25 years, so that's plenty of time to wait for the 'Stead to clean up?? hahah

There's supposed to be a revitalization of Hempstead, Incorporated Village of Hempstead check there it's on the front page. Whether it happens or is just a pipe dream, I don't know.

DH grew up there.
If you're planning on staying for 25 years, you might want to do some checking into the status of the village's finances. They have some big ticket pension obligations coming up. General expectation is that village taxes are due for a huge bump in a few years, and St. Paul's remains unresolved. Just a heads up.
You can go to the Garden City police and ask for records of incidents on the block. Many people don't realize that crime information is public record.
In another thread on here, I recall someone posting that a dead body was once found on Meadow Street. I don't remember if it was a joke. I hope it was.
I hate to sound discouraging because it appears you found the perfect house. I looked at homes on Meadow years ago, but rejected it because of proximity to Hempstead. It's a little too easy for burglars or other criminals to get into Garden City, do the deed and escape quickly, IMHO.

.
It was not a joke. The man was murdered in Hempstead and dumped on someone's lawn on Meadow.
You guys realize the people in Hempsted is doing this so they can drive the property values down then buy in GC and move in to take over the area. Good luck.
nycbrooklyn...surely you jest!?
I don't think the Hempstead Sec 8 folks are gearing up to buy a reduced GC million-dollar mansion, do you?
For as long as I lived on LI the wall between GC and Hempstead has "held"; it will do so for years to come.
