1st offense? Plead not guilty. Get a hearing date. Go to court. Be polite and say you did not realize you were going that fast and apologize. Be humble and contrite and ask for the judge to lower the fine and remove the points. He will likely lower the fine and reduce the points to 2 (unlikely he'll go to zero points at 20mph over the limit). Still better than 6 points and a full fine (could be $200). Absolute worst that happens is you waste a day and get the full 6 points plus fine but that is unlikely as it's a 1st offense and you are showing up to take responsibility. I'm willing to bet, 2 points and $100 fine (maybe less). Anything more and you should politely try to negotiate down. The court is all about negotiating. Good luck.

The tints alone are $80 + $50 mandatory surcharge.
Speeding ticket is probably $200 + $80 mandatory surcharge

Nassau County Traffic & Parking Violations Agency

My bet is he's at least $300 poorer when he leaves. $700 with a lawyer.

Thanks for your responses everyone. I'm nervous about the whole thing but will definitely make sure I never speed anywhere again!

Pay the fine. You're stressing over nothing.Seriously....why go through the BS of paying a lawyer and going back a second time? Is it worth the $200 you might save? If your license has been clean until this your insurance will not go up for a speeding ticket.

Big Blue. The cop told me I could NOT just mail the ticket in and pay the fine. He said I have to go to court. Everyone I've talked to in LI has said to not plead guilty. I am taking the defensive course at a local driving school and I am getting my tints removed in a few hours.

What---had to go to the bathroom, did not realize speed. Sounds like you are guilty. Pay the ticket and be done with it. You will be 55 before the next ticket.

Listen to Pequaman and Mongoose. I've done it a couple times and had no issues. The fine will be between 250-350.

Yes, whether you plan to plead guilty or not guilty, you are due to appear in court. If you appear on your court date and plead not guilty, you are essentially saying that you want to present your case at trial before a judge. You will be given another future court date at which you will present this case. Which basically means that all the fretting you are doing now will continue to your second court date. It's also my understanding -- from the rundown given to the court by the judge from my speeding ticket -- that pleading not guilty and then reappearing only to say " I didn't do it" or "I didn't know" is perceived as a waste of their time and will not do you any favors.

If you decide instead to plead guilty and state your "case" to the judge, as a first-time offender there is the strong likelihood that your speeding will be knocked down to a lesser charge with a fine.
