I would say most people posting on the LI forum are most familiar with Long Island so I'm not sure what they can tell you about these places. Why don't you put a post up on the various forums relating to these places you are interested in?

Why not add Pittsburgh to your list. The rents are cheap here, quality of life is good and it has 3 rivers. Take a wee peak into it.

Seriously consider Texas....I used to live outside of Houston in Deer Park (Andy Petitte's hometown) and I liked it there. Housing is much cheaper, $150k-$200k for a brand new 4 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house. $500 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment.

Best of all, Texas has no state tax.

If the economy was booming, id say go for it. But with limited skills and education, it doesnt matter how cheap an area is, you may not find a job

Don't leave Long Island, being happy and not paying all of your income is very over rated.

Not disagreeing with you, I think the OP might be better off in TX for their situation. But there's been a lot of chatter how other states are 80% cheaper. It's a bunch of BS. If the most the market will pay for a brand new 4/2.5 home is $150k-$200k, there is a reason for that.
On the COL front, those taxes are taken in other ways, including through reduced services.

What's the appeal of Memphis? Want to hang out in Graceland?

$500/month in Texas for a 1 bedroom sounds great, its just a matter of knowing what kinds of jobs are available there. I'm open to trying something new, but I would just like some help knowing what I'm better off looking for and what is available for a decent wage so I can have a life out there.
