This goes to two rules when buying a home:
1. Always do your homework about every aspect of the home you can find. The OP was very wise to discover this problem before purchase. I even check tax rolls and Google the names of my potential neighbors to see what they're all about. You never know what you might dig up. Yes, it takes a lot of time, but this is usually the biggest purchase of your life.
2. Never, ever, buy a home next to commercial property. Apparently, these plumes can spread well beyond commercial districts, so that's not a guarantee. But it is still a good rule to follow.
haven't heard about radon being a problem on LI - it's an issue in northern Fairfield County Ct
Long Island is a large Glacial Moraine where huge ice sheets starting in places like Quebec or Ontario flowed southwards to reach the Atlantic Ocean. Places on Earth today that look like oru region 15,000 plus years ago are Greenland and Antarctica. These ice sheets acted like bulldozers and pushed rocks from New England to Long Island so if those rocks had a little radium, uranium or thorium Long Island would have that too and radon might be slowly leaking upwards.
As brief background, the Speonk Solvent Plume was discovered in 2001 via a contaminated well in Speonk. The primary chemical in the plume is “PCE” – which is an industrial degreaser, similar to dry cleaning fluid and it affected several wells.
