If anyone has purchased their primary residence in Suffolk County since March of last year, the deadline to apply for STAR for next year is rapidly approaching!! It's March 1st!!
Here's the info from the Town of Huntington website, but it applies to all of Suffolk County:
The New York State School Tax Relief (STAR) Program provides a property tax savings from school taxes for ALL owner-occupied primary residences.
Senior Citizens may be eligible for a larger savings if their combined annual incomes for 2009 does not exceed $79,050 (Enhanced STAR).
To apply for either BASIC STAR or Enhanced STAR, you MUST file application with the Huntington STAR office by March 1, ("taxable status date") in order to be applied to the following year's tax bill.
BASIC STAR applicants have NOAge or Annual Renewal Requirements.
Beginning in 2011 the annual income for BASIC Star cannot exceed $500,000.
Enhanced STAR applicantsMUSTsubmit proof of Age and Income, and MUSTrenew annually, on or before March 1st of each year.
what happens if you just bought a new property, want to file, but technically still own a home that receives star?
You can own only ONE primary residence at a time = get only ONE STAR exemption in any given year.
Is your other house under contract? In that case it's worth a try.
BTW, if you close after March 1st (or February 28/29th), you will have to wait till next year. Chances are, you will benefit at least partially from the previous owners' exemption though.
