Uniondale School District
I was hoping that someone can help me. I have a son that will be starting kindergarden. Our school district is Uniondale. I am zoned for Northern Parkway school. Does anyone have any advice? Should I try the school or should I put him in private school. I appreciate any advice and information that you have.

I just looked it up on GreatSchools.net. It only got a great schools rating of 5, which is low. And the percentage of free lunch is half of the school, at 49%, which is VERY high. If these things concern you, I would use private school if it won't break the bank. If you cannot afford private school, you will have to make the best of it. Sometimes schools are what we make of them.
Good luck with whatever you chose.

Thank you so much for the website. I will use that as a resource. Unfortunatly my husband and I moved to long island for the school system. We knew private school would be hard for us. I will try to go to the school board and see if I can send him to a school with a higher rating.

Also, does anyone have any advice on appealing to the school board? I would like to know how to get my son in a school in my district which I am not zoned for.
Thank you so very much. Moving to LI for me and family seems to have been a mistake. We are struggling to live here but, we are not receiving good services. Thanks again.

Sorry to hear that tre....I always have heard Uniondale isn't the best district but I just read the greatschools.net reviews for the high school and the most recent ones are VERY positive. Seems like things are changing drastically there....I'm assuming you've got another year before your son starts school, why not go to the school personally and tell them you're concerned, see if any of the changes at the high school have happened there too? Good luck in any case!

Its somewhat relative. While Uniondale isn't as good as many of the other districts on LI, its given a bad rep. I would say its only considered bad when compared with some of the other schools on LI which happen to be among the best in the nation. Its not Roosevelt, Hempstead or Wyandanch either. Compared to your average school district on LI, it might not be the greatest, but compared to the average school in the state or nation its still a decent district. Its only that it gets compared to some of the best schools in the nation that gives it a bad rep. The district has also improved quite a bit over the last few years.

The district has improved quite a bit in recent years, but I believe there was recently a question of whether they had cheated/fudged scores or something. Maybe check Newsday.
You don't hear about Uniondale having the violence/gang problems of say, Hempstead. I would look at Great Schools and ask around a bit. Go hang out at the Library and ask other parents.

Thank you for the help. It is quite difficult to decide to use the public schools. I went on the district website and they do not allow you to alternate between schools in the district. For example if there was a school that was better and I was not zoned I would not be able to send my child. I am very frustrated. My husband and I will try the public school next year. If it is a horrible, then we have no choice but to switch to private.

well tre i should'nt be concerned about Uniondale's School District neither about Northern PArway School. I once attended NP School and i got a great education, same with my youngest sister, she's about to graduate 5th grade and she had great teachers during her years grade. Regarding the other schools, I'm now a senior at Uniondale High School and regrding our academics, we have a high percentage of high scores amoung the students. Also, there are no gangs neither any fights or any of the other violence incidents that migh occur in other towns near by. I will highly recommned this district.
