We just listed our house for sale in Smithtown, and we having an Open house this coming weekend. Its listed on MLS - We have a Virtual Tour - its on Craigslist and some of the other internet sites. We wanted to put an ad in the weekend newspapers, but wondering if we should put it in Newsday?....or maybe the New York Times? or do most just use the Internet these days?
I think you would be wasting your money putting it in the NY Times. That paper doesnt have the readership it use to...and its main audience now is not looking to move to Long Island..unless its the Hamptons.

Good luck! I'll try and stop by if at all possible.
Most buyers are online. A few will look at Newsday (mostly boomers ).
IMHO The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal are for true high end properties.
We go to Open Houses every weekend and our major source is MLSLI.com. If it is not listed on there, then I am not aware of it. (We won't become serious buyers until we get an offer from a buyer on our current home). I know there are other sources like Zillow, Redfin and Listingbook (which doesn't seem to like me, I can't get them to acknowledge my registration) but I agree that NYTimes is probably overload.
MLSLI by far attracts the most buyer traffic. Print ads are old school and are no longer very useful. If you have an agent working for you, he/she can still list it on The Times' web site and a gazillion other places on the web where it will be seen, such as realtor.com. I believe you can also do that yourself even if you bought your own MLS listing. However, if you don't have a large number of high quality photos and a great description of the home's best selling points, then it won't matter where you promote it beyond MLS.

Thank you everyone for your quick replies. I have been back in forth in my head about the Newsday ad......If most people do all their searches on the internet, we should be in good shape. I know when we are looking for houses (out of State) we never look in any magazines or papers, it all via the internet - so maybe that is the way to go.
