Not Huntington. No appropriate legal rentals in or alongside the village for you. (Of course there may be one or two exceptions as there always are in life). Huntington village does have many restaurants/bars and an easy commute to Melville, and if you ignore 25A has a certain charm, but price/availablilty/dog rules out that area for you IMHO.
If you're working in Melville it seems to me living in Huntington would be a no-brainer. Plenty of stuff to do (not just nightlife and that's where it trumps RVC and LB) and an easy commute. I can't imagine commuting from Long Beach to Melville, although I am sure rents are dirt cheap there post-Sandy.
Dirt being the operative word. Lots of it there in the streets (Sand)
Try Babylon Village. There's bound to be one or two complexes that are pet friendly, but you will most likely have to pay an additional fee. Plenty of bars and nightspots within walking distance and it's a short drive to Bay Shore/Islip/Fire Island Ferries.
I got some "young" friends who live in the apartments above the stores on main street in both Bay Shore and Babylon. They love it. Def. nice if you are into living somewhat urban on LI. Moving in was a b*tch tho.
So is the LIE and Northern State so whats your point?
