Hi all,
We are looking at houses in Valley Stream/Malverne. My husband works in the city & has a commercial vehicle so he either has to stay off the parkways & take LIE all the way then local or can drive a car into Queens & pick up his commercial vehicle & then head on to Manhattan (which would be less convenient for his business as he often needs access to his van, but doable if it allows him to be home earlier).

He could schedule his day to leave after 10 am most times (except peak season, i.e. summer) and come home later than rush hour. Would this change things much for the traffic in his commute or is it just a constant factor throughout the day? We have only traveled to LI in midday on a few days of the week and the weekends and it hasn't been terrible at say 2-3:30 pm but we were coming from Queens and were able to take the parkways.

Any suggestions to work it out so the kids will have some time with him in our new home? Also, about what time does the heavy rush hour begin on LIE/GCP in case he can leave really early & come home earlier instead? Thanks in advance!

Rush hour is generally from 6-9:30 am in my experience.....when you get closer to 10am the traffic dies down immensly on the LIE and highways.

In the evening I would say after 7pm the rush starts to die down. But between 4pm-7pm its pretty brutal.

Stay off the Van Wick... its only good going South in the mornings. He would need to be back home before 230 to beat the afternoon rush hour. Once school gets out forget about it.
