I would only do it if budget were the main factor. Lived on a double yellow growing up. We also came from queens. At the time we didn't mind it but going back there to live temporarily recently it was really annoying... and that's not even a highway.

Another poster brought up a good point, though-- if by north shore, the OP means that sliver of 135 between Jericho Turnpike and the LIE, there isn't much traffic on that stretch, IIRC.
^ good point - if it really is Jericho, only Park Dr E. backs the 135 south (no houses on 135 north Jericho). It's true there's very little traffic on that part of the 135... people are just getting on from Jericho Tpke. Maybe you'll get speed demons accelerating though.
We saw a house like this just this past saturday. It was on a dead-end street but there were just some trees separating the house from Rte. 135. It was also a short sale.
I was hoping I could get past the noise (coming from Queens), but I couldn't. Just the thought of trying to have a nice BBQ dinner in the backyard with all that noise was stressing me out. We decided to pass, even though the price was hard to ignore.
We looked at condos near the Expressway and people say they eventually forget the noise is there. While you may have the same experience, you'll be reminded of your bad location when you try to sell. I've found that you can usually find a home in the same area with a better location for the same or only a little more money. You just need to look a little harder.

I think there's a difference between living near a parkway versus an expressway. Parkways have a muffled consistent noise and often have more trees backing it, so it's easier to get used to. Expressways are harder to get used to because of the variance in cars, trucks, and busses (all making different noises).
Keep looking traffic and its noise will only increase as time goes by also exhaust fumes as wellJMHO
