I live in Suffolk County but we will be moving to Nassau in the summer. My son will start Kindergarten in Sept. What do I do since all the kindergarten cut off dates are this week? Can I still enroll my son late? Will they deny him entry?

You cannot be denied entry into a public school. The spring registration dates are done now so that the Kindergarten Readiness Tests can be administered before June. The results of these tests will help the schools create balanced classes based on the children's ability levels. The sooner you can register, the better. Many districts have cutoff dates as to when they will split a class that is too big. So if a new student comes in the week after the cutoff, that school will be stuck with a "too big" class for the rest of the year.

If you know what district you will be moving into, contact them now to find out what proof of residency you will need, as well as what medical forms will be required. It will save you some running around at the 11th hour in August if you get your ducks in a row now.

Many people choose to move in the summer so that their kids can start their new school by Sept. I'll bet your child will not be the only new registrant for kindergarten in August.

My daughter started her new kindergarten school in january right after holiday break. We werent allowed to start the registration process until we closed and moved into our new home. It took a day or two for the district to place her in a classroom. On that same day, two other children started school as well. They just allocated each kid to a diffferent teacher to even out the class size. This is for school district 14-hewlett woodmere. But you should call your own district to see if they do things any differently.

Some districts will register you with executed sale agreement on a house in the district.
