Morning or evening rush?? When during the rush hour? Also where in Suffolk are you coming from? Going through Lido Blvd, Long Beach and Atlantic Beach can be a bit time consuming with all the lights, etc, but might be worth it especially if your near the Robert Moses Causeway from all the time you would save on Ocean Pkwy as opposed to the parking lot known as the Southern State

I'm not sure how long it would take to go through Lido beach, Long Beach and Atlantic Beach, if you hit the lights right it shouldn't be too bad, if you don't it could be very tough. Thats a long ride of not being on any type of highway. If your leaving towards the end of the morning rush 8:30-9:00, I would say you should probably stick with the normal route as the Southern State generally isn't too bad then. However, if you leave any earlier than that its worth a shot.

I've done it many times from North Babylon to JFK. I take Southern State to the Belt to JFK. I've done it early in the morning with no traffic and it takes under an hour, but during morning rush expect to double that time.

I've gone from JFK to NB many times during the PM rush home and it takes about an hour-and-a-half. It is very slow going through Nassau - traffic slows at every interchange: Crooss Island, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, 135. Once in Suffolk the traffic moves.

My advice is to take something to drink and to eat.

last time I went to JFK was about a year ago. Going there we took a car service from Massapequa Park, got there pretty quick, but it was after the morning rush (left around 9:45 or so). Coming home was right smack during the afternoon rush the following week and too air train LIRR was pretty easy
