It's too early for anything worthwhile. Last time I had to look on Long Island the brokers basically told me any place worth living in would be snatched up quickly, so it isn't even worth looking until less than a month before you need to move in. The only landlords that will say "Sure, I will wait 2 months before I collect rent from you," are the ones with crappy places that know they may not be able to rent it out before then.

The boyfriend and I are renting right now in East Northport, 1400/month for 1 bedroom but with an office area for him, utilities included, no washer/dryer or backyard access. Very quiet and friendly street that is close to everything.

We had a budget of about 1200-1400 a month, hopefully with utilities included. Took us 5 months to find something decent, looking on an off because we saw the same thing all the time. Also, we weren't in a rush.

We scoured Craigslist, apartments.com, Trulia. We contacted agents, but they were useless to us. We didn't look at anything without pics (that was mostly the boyfriends choice, I had no issue looking at things without pics since I've lived in well over a dozen apartments in my life). We wanted to stay as close to the Nassau/Suffolk border as possible, which turned out to be a really big plus since I got a new job in Melville a few months into our rental.

Personally, I think we could've snatched something up quicker, every apartment we saw wanted us in right away, but we waited and found the perfect place for us.

Also, be aware if you're looking on Craigslist or anywhere for that matter, that you know if you'll be dealing with a broker or owner. Then you'll have to fork over money to the broker, your security deposit and first months rent.
