Twingles is correct. There are not very many houses in GC that sell for under $600, and even those are a precious few. But it is not impossible to find something in the 5's in GC. That would give you access to GC facilities, etc. Find a good agent who is willing to work for you, and keep checking realtor and taylorwarner.
That said, SM is a great little town. I live in St. Anne's parish and have gone to that church most of my life. Some of the most wonderful people in the parish live in SM. And the Covert Avenue shopping that others have mentioned is wonderful.

Regarding the Stewart Manor elementary school, I have a relative from New Hyde Park whose son went there. They were very happy with the school, and he did very well. Her child is now one of the top students at their public high school. The best way to decide if the school is right for your children is to visit. People have a tendency to put their own spin on advice and can give you misinformation about a district and may know nothing about it. See for yourself. If you are looking for diversity in school, i don't think Garden City is the right choice. I agree with what you said, diversity is the real world and teaches compassion and tolerance.......one of the best lessons children can learn at an early age.

I've been following this thread and its entirely possible that LegalDiva and Christinebsmith could be bidding against each other for the same house in GC. Now that would make things interesting for sure!

Thank you to everyone for their comments here on the Stewart Manor area and houses on Fernwood in particular. I am in the midst of moving forward on a home there right now and the area seems perfect. We were originally looking at GC proper, a few blocks away actually, but Fernwood is a better option with nicer home & lower taxes and the same school district.

Garden city real estate is over valued in price. The people who live in the village are sports obsessed. And children who are unable to accelerate in sports are systematically bullied out of the Garden city public school system. It's not worth going into financial excess to purchase a home in the village. Life long residents are denied basic services e..g. senior and disabled financial/social services and one taxi company has a monopoly on fares and service for the community.

On the other hand Garden city is now surrounded by over crowded deteriorating suburban communities. For instance the finances of the neighboring Sewanhaka school district which serves over ninety percent of Stewart Manor has suffered from demographic shifts, financial negligence and overcrowding for the past thirty years or so.

Ultimately we never bothered to make an offer on any GC or SM homes. We just didnt like the houses we saw in our price range (500-600K). We opted to buy in North Bellmore instead, and love how huge our lot size is compared to what 500K would have gotten us further west.

As a GC resident most of these comments are insulting and untrue.
