Warm weather
We're 20 minutes from a really heavily populated area (like Nassau County), but where we are is still pretty populated. Another 20 minutes away is Atlanta if we ever get the itch for city sights.
People are friendly
The area is heavily invested in jobs for my industry (City of Alpharetta Website || HOME)
One thing I don't like is the amount of subdivisions.
Nice website and so easy to find everthing in one spot...
In terms of weather I believe NY has a pretty good deal. Sure it's not the greatest winter or summer but, there are 5-6 months of pretty great temperatures here. Anyone that loves temps above 75 most be in AC the majority of the time or are old/frail and the heat and humidity feel good. For someone that works outdoors there are few if any better places to work than NY. Jan/Feb are a little rough but, if dressed properly are better than Jul/Aug.

Eh, the SF Bay area any day over NY..it's like perpetual Autumn, you hardly use AC or heat. In general the entire West Coast has much more moderate temps than NY, from Vancouver all the way to San Diego, the temperature swings from Summer to Winter are much less intense than the East Coast. The only issue with the Pacific NW cities is lack of sunlight.

Agreed. The COL is comparable though. I know of a family that moved to Oregon and it looks beautiful as well.
Just go. There's always something to complain about, you'll never hear the end of it.
Amherst, NY is up there. I lived there too for a short while. Does anyone know what the winter is like there? And how long it lasts? Exactly.
More opinions, top 5 for example:
1. Carmel, IN$304,340 (middle of nowhere)
2. McKinney, TX$245,917 (TX, who here would go there?)
3. Eden Prairie, MN$413,566 (brrrrrr)
4. Newton, MA$850,117 (avg listing is how much?!)
5. Redmond, WA$518,982 (just read the comments)

It does, but it has plenty of issues depending on where you live. If you live in Portland, there's this thing called "the gloom", ie it's cloudy for weeks on end during certain times of the year.
Once you get away from the coast, it get really rural very quickly, and the economy sucks. Meth labs, etc.
I just looked at average temperatures on the West coast..the difference between January and July avg highs in New York is 46 degrees...in cities like San Diego, LA and San Francisco..the difference are under 15 degrees....in Santa Monica, it's about 7 degrees between the warmest and hottest months. The Pacific is their air conditioner, basically.
California for me. Housing is just as expensive as Long Island, but California housing stock is generally newer and more spacious, so you feel like you get more bang for your buck. Property taxes are a bargin in California compared to LI. As other posters stated, the weather is much more mild so energy costs tend to be much less, and fresh fruits and veggies are cheaper in California. Also, California has a lot more higher paying and interesting private sector jobs than LI (especially in the Bay Area and LA), so there is a more even income to COL ratio compared to LI from what I've seen.
I also would be happy in Colorado or Arizona, there's a lot going for Phoenix and Denver metro areas. One of my good friends moved from LI to North Carolina a few months ago and loves it there.

Two things I cannot dispute that are superior in California to the NY metro area: food quality (most things are cheaper and fresher) and weather. NYC is proud of it's restaurants and should be, but San Francisco restaurants are on par, and run of the mill non-fancy neighborhood type places are almost always of a higher grade on the West Coast. You can buy 4 avocados for a dollar on sale in LA....
Born and raised on Long Island for 20 yrs. Left for Southwest Florida. Love it!! Quality of life is much higher then what I had on LI. don't miss NY, but sure do miss my family. Long Island is a love-hate relationship for me.
I had it living here. I'm looking at the Carolinas. You can take a large decrease in salary and still have a decent lifestyle. Good by the Dormerville.
