Do we have to wait until closing to obtain the blue prints on the home? I've googled around and can't figure out where we could even obtain them from. Is it Nassau County?
if you're in town of hempstead you can go down to the building department, look up the file, and view copies of them, then pay a few bucks and they'll make copies for you.
also, just to clarify, you don't need to own the home to do that. I have blueprints of 2 houses I was considering
I got mine from the Town of Smithtown but that was after I purchased my home. I can't remember what department is was that I had to go down to get them but the town definitely had them on file and I had to pay a small fee for a copy.

Yeah,I got it from the building dept. too. I am in Town of North Hempstead, the house was built in 1948.
It is worth to make a trip to the building dept., you can have more info. of the works done by the previous owner, especially if you are going to do some home improvement projects in the future. BTW, I got it before closing. Good Luck!

Also, just as a pointer for everyone, when you go to buy a home, definately do this. you get to see what they have permits for and what they don't
I know things are stricter now and banks and lawyers will check most of the time, but its good to know yourself. in my situation, I pulled the file and got copies of everything and noticed there was no permit for the finishing the upstairs and the upstairs bathroom. The seller's lawyers knew about it and were working on it, but this was before my lawyer checked on anything, so we didn't know about it yet.
It keeps people honest and can avoid delays if you find out things early.
