So Apparently I bought a house that has a bathroom that is not registered with the Nassau county (Hempstead)... Any one know the steps to legalize it ? What if building department shows up at my door tomorrow ? What am I risking ? Would they make me take it down and redo it with permits etc ?
Unless they come to your front door with a warrant, nobody is ever going to know whether your bathroom is illegal or not unless you tell them or invite them into your house. They can't show up and just ask to inspect your home for violations.

Thank you very much for the reply !
Would they be able to get a warrant ? If lets say some one makes an anonymous call ?
How would I legalize it anyway ? Can I just ask an assessor from the county come and write that there are more bathrooms and start paying taxes based on that ? Would that make it legal ?

No, they can't get a warrant. To make it legal you'd have to apply for a permit then have a plumber, contractor, and electrician come in and state that its all to code. If its not to code you'll have to make it to code.
You're best bet is to leave it alone, a huge percentage of homes have "illegal" bathrooms (what a silly phrase). The town doesn't just show up at houses for no reason, and even if they did you don't have to let them in. You'll just be making trouble for yourself by trying to make it "legal". Plus you'd pay more taxes and that's never a good thing.
What Im afraid of is some one that was in my house will call building department and they will show up.
How much more taxes would it be ? We were told by some one if accessors office shows up and changes the assesments to have 1 more bathroom technicly that makes it "legal" and building department cant really make us tear it down or go thru the whole process. Does that sound right ?
I would cross that bridge if/when you get to it. You sound like you're stressing over a " what if ", and most times they never happen. Like Apple Juice said, leave it alone!
We believe that some one that was in our house and saw the bathroom are plaining to report us to DOB. This is why we are so paranoid. The interesting part to all of this is that we converted to gas and had all the needed inspections etc and passed it very recently.....
Also some work was done in that bathroom like new tile etc.. and we are afraid this will be a waste (some expensive tile )
