Wink Good stats about Long Island

This is from Sperling's Best Places ( under least stressful places to live )
Nassau-Suffolk, New York
Although residents of Nassau and Suffolk counties have a very long commuting journey, the area has the lowest violent and property crime rates in the country. The divorce and suicide rates are also among the lowest in the country, indicating a safe and stable place to live.

Good job pointing that out. LI is a safe place when compared to many of the so called shangri-las Long Islanders are fleeing to in the sunbelt.

BTW Oregon is pretty safe in my opnion.

Really? That surprises me. Seems pretty gorgeous and safe to me. I wonder where the crime is coming from?

BTW thanks for this thread.

Smash255 is on a distinguished road
Long Island is a very safe place. Incidents do happen and their is more media coverage of it, which may make people think more is going on in the past, or compared to elsewhere, but the reality is the opposite. Also the large population (2.8 million + between Nassau & Suffolk) is a contributing factor. the larger the area, the more things will tend to happen, but % wise LI has an amazingly low crime rate compared to the rest of the nation. Even the so called "high crime" areas have a much lower crime rate than other so called "high crime" areas of the country and the crime rate really is that much different between the high crime areas of LI and the average rate for the country. Just seems high because it gets compared to the rest of LI whose crime rates are so much lower than the national average.

I have always felt safe here.
When I have visitors from Ireland, they are always amazed. At home you never leave anything in your car, never leave it unlocked, always deadbolt the houses etc. You would NEVER leave anything out on your front lawn.

Perhaps it's all those people moving there b/c they can't afford other places. You are really seeing it in the Poconos..becoming quite the ghetto in some areas.
