Of course my opinion but it just seems silly to go upstate to a winery when we have them here. To each her own though.

I would add Lake George and Saratoga depending on how far OP wants to travel. Minnehaha boat ride is good times.

Skaneateles or Cazenovia would be nice, quaint villages that would be worth a visit. Perhaps Clinton outside of Utica or Ithaca.

How about Albany itself? Is there anything to do there besides Colonie Center Mall? I was considering Kingston for a day trip but the place seems to have too little to offer by itself for such a long drive.

Regarding Albany - NY State Museum is there. Also visit the Empire State Mall - great example of 1960's urban renewal. You will either love it or hate it.
City of Albany has bad areas but coming back, especially around the State Capitol Building.

As I mentioned earlier on this thread, the Capitol building offers tours. It has a very interesting history and design. The state museum is free and it is quite large. The exhibits are kind of a hodge-podge, but there's some interesting stuff. It's kind of similar to the Museum of Natural History in NYC. The governor's mansion also offers tours, but I have yet to take one. The state library is also in Empire Plaza and worth a visit. Try to make arrangements in advance to get a tour of the archives. This is all good stuff to do with your kids. Across the river, Troy has a few small historical sites of interest and the RPI campus is pretty nice.
