Unfortunately, it's human nature to remove the 'y' in Holy Day and replace it with an 'i' to make holiday, thereby replacing the serious and sometimes difficult religious obligations and observances of a particular faith with a 'secular' celebration that's been stripped of almost all religious significance.
Chanukah is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. Many non-Jews (and even many assimilated Jews) think of this holiday as the Jewish Christmas, adopting many of the Christmas customs, such as elaborate gift-giving and decoration. It is bitterly ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on the Jewish calendar.
The 8-day rabbinic Festival of Chanukah (KHAH-nik-uh; KHAH-noo-kah) begins at sundown, Tuesday night, December 4.

It's kind of ironic that they make such a big deal out of Christmas.
I don't think anyone has a clue when Jesus was really born. The whole importance of it has its roots in the early Christian Church's efforts to replace some Pagan winter festival with its own holiday, more a matter of public relations than theology.
I'm not a very religious man myself, but I am a believing man, and it seems like the main holiday of the religion is Easter...just as (for different reasons) the core holiday of Judiaism is Passover.

Yes, that is true. You are correct. It is Easter. The other holidays, I guess, are just so much more f8n.

I do enjoy seeing them lying sideways after a windy day . More times than not the owners leave them like that for days !!! It's also funny seeing them "bob" in the wind. How tacky.

I heard that question from a little girl to her Mom several years ago. The homeowners had deflated them during the day. They really do look dead, or in a deep sleep. lol The girl's Mom told her the latter.

Yep, all true.
Also R. H. Macy's, Isidor Straus and Early Hollywood (All Jewish) had a huge hand as well.

I think they look horrible when deflated! A bunch of saggy balloons waiting for more air.
One or two are fine for a lawn.
I can't understand how people have the money to go overboard and do those megadecoration houses you see featured in Newsday!

I remember the constrant drone of the electric fans that kept these monstrosities inflated. Ick.
This is not limited to the Island, though, here in NC there are big ugly loud inflated turkeys on teh lawns, too.
The Christmas monstrosity of the year is on display at Lowe's- a snow globe with Santa & the sleigh on top of it. Truly grotesque.

Yeah, but it is the fault of Christians who buy into all this. If everyone celebrated advent, went to church, concerts, carolled, did crafts, made a fun ritual out of lighting the advent wreath, baked more, visited people all month, and gave less gifts then the season would have more meaning.
We do it to ourselves.

Indeed.
A buddy of mine calls it the Winter Marketing Festival. Myself, I actively discourage people from giving me gifts, so I won't have to give them one. It was nothing but a big stress attack - I totally opt out of it these days.
