I recall the in/on controversy when Everybody Loves Raymond first premiered. The first line out of his mouth indicates the writer was unfamiliar with saying on Long Island. After the success of his show, he moved his parents out to Setauket. Hopefully they've adapted to saying they live ON Long Island.

I remember this-- they got a lot of letters from angry Long Islanders, so they changed it. I can't remember if it was a mid season change or second season change.

Season 2 (from what I am seeing on line) had the conveyor belt opening, but I believe that was when they dropped the 'in' and rephrased the opening.
I only correct people to bust their chops, I don't take it as seriously as some Long Islanders do. There are some situations where IN would make sense, but ON is generally the rule.

Doggone it, I can't remember now! I came across an exception last week, but my memory is failing me.
