Most shelters have an option to foster a dog with the intent to adopt, so you can always foster first to see if the dog is a good fit for your family before you commit to the adoption.

We have two rescue dogs from the North Hempstead Animal Shelter in Port Washington on Marino Avenue........a great place (not to be confused with North Shore Animal League also in Port Washington). One of our dogs is a pit. We have had dogs all of our lives and I have to say she is one of the best dogs we ever had. She is smart, kind and gentle. She loves children. She wants to please. Pit bulls get such a bad rap. The stories of abuse these dogs go through because of these dog frightening groups are heartbreaking. Thank God many are rescured from these cruel/abrasive people. Yes, there are a lot of them in the shelters, but many times it is because their owners failed them. I see more and more people giving pits a chance and loving them.

Whatever dog you decide to get, please consider adopting from a shelter. There are so many dogs needing loving homes.

As most people say, do not buy from a puppy store or puppy mill adopt from a shelter or a rescue group. We have 5 dogs and 2 are from Brookhaven Animal Shelter, one from Save-a-Pet, one from a family that abused him and the fifth from red necks in Pa. where we lived for a while. All are wonderful dogs and we would never get rid of any of them. Remember if you own a dog or cat, they are part of your family and please never bring them to a shelter, because chances are they will be killed especially pit bulls. If you really need to give them up, look for new owners first, but don't put it on Craigslist because it is know that dog fighters get their bait from Craigslist. You can probably find a rescue that could help you.
