I remember GEM being built. I grew up in Elmont in the 50's and 60's. I first learned to drive in the GEM parking lot on Sundays. Anyone remember Hungry Herman's, Bowlair, Belmont Boulevard (Clara H Carlson), Alva T. I remember the Walcliff pool and hearingthe sounds whil we sat in class as the school term closed in June. The skating rink was great as well. I remember Mr. Castor who ws the manager of the place. Lot of change since. I actually found a 1956 Sewanhaka yearbook showing the buildig of EHS, FMHS (Plainview Ave), Alva T, and HF Cary! I guess they had money then.

Great Eastern Mills
OMG I remember the big fair with all the rides they would have each year.
I used to get my Barbie dolls from GEM. lol
Wasn't there a Milk Maid down the road, across the turnpike? I remember it turned into a hamburger place called Carroll's after that. Now it is Blockbuster. I lived on E St. Now live in Franklin Square. A lifetime ago it seems...

Bumped into Joey C in Huntington beleive it or not and did some work on his house for him a few years ago. Speaking of back then...JoeyC and I went to the first Bealtles concert at Shea Stadium together. I bought the most expensive tickets they had...cost all of $8 and change...lol....and I couldn't hear a single song they sang.
Lets see...what radio station were we listening to round that time? WABeatleC or was it The WMCA Good Guys? And how long was it till FM and WPLJ came into all us NY'ers lives? 70-71-ish? Remember Ba-Ba-Lu and Carole Miller and and Zacherle and Tony Pig...and then we got real underground and went with WBAI.
Also...if I recall correctly...just up the road a spell and around a cpl a corners from Great Eastern Mills was an indoor roller rink? Or was that an ice skating rink?
Mannnnnnnnnn...that wuz a lotta years ago. Did you ever see me on The Alan Burke Show with The Diggers? Ahhhhh...don't get me goin'...lol

It was Walcliff Roller Rink. OMG i used to go every Saturday. The music was piped in organ music. But we had a blast. They changed the name later on and now they build condos there. It's right across from Clara H. Carlson formerly known as Belmont Blvd. School.

I vaguely rem. Gouz Farm and the roller rink, didnt live in Elmont but near there, went to WRR a few times way back when (am I dreaming or did one of the skaters/employees have a monkey-??) - haven't been to the area in quite some time but the names definitely ring a bell.

Elmont
ok, this is alot of fun, kinda sentimental and real depressing realizing how old I am. lol I just passed Gouz Farm over the weekend....which is now Western Beef. The police station (the 5th) is still on Dutch. Let's see, on the turnpike....it has all changed. There is Home Depot where Great Eastern Mills used to be. A blockbuster where Carrolls and before that Milk Maid used to be. Ummmm the racetrack is still there.
I am not so much into the new library. It is pretty, but kind of cold. The old one was home, cozy, familiar, dimly lit. This one is very bright. But they have old pics of the way Elmont used to look, lining all the walls and they have plays there. The Broadhollow Theatre performs there now. Pretty cool. You get to see a decent play for $20.
Well have a great weekend all..... gonna go shoot myself. LOL

I remember the 5th precinct being built. Everyone felt better when the police station went up. It was near Gouz and the A&P. There was Aaron's Drug Store and the always crowded Joe's Deli. Sunday the line for Joe's was out the door and we all had to take numbers.

I can remember the old library like it was yesterday. I spent so much time there. I would get a stack of books and given 2 weeks to read them. I loved that library and spent so much time there. I even remember so many of the books I checked out.
Memories and great ones at that.
