It might help to choose schools and work backward from there. You can tell the realtor which district you are interested in and she'll show you homes in the appropriate area.
I doubt the people there will be unfriendly but they might not exactly be 'friendly' either. We're talkin' New Yorkers here. As time goes by you'll find your friends via your activities and interests. It's not hard to make friends.

I grew up in Garden City and still work there, as well as still have family and friends that live there. It's pretty, preppy and timeless, and some folks love it and some folks wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Although my husband and I would go elsewhere even if I had the $$, I prefer it to a lot of Nassau. People are very nice, but some are defintely super-coiffed, super-put together, all designer. Then there's plenty who don't care.
Pine St. is in the Eastern section, which does border Hempstead (one of the least desireable areas in Nassau). But I love it, very quiet, leafy and low-key, lots of young families. A lot of people buy there as a starter, but lots stay there also. I don't personally know anyone who's had a break-in, actually more break ins on the other side of town. Country Life Press is a train station on the Eastern side of town (Streets like Magnolia Ave, and St. James Pl.) Again, beautiful, I would definitely want there. It's closer to the center of town.
At 12, I moved to the Mott Section, which is nice as well. Lots of Tudors if you like them. TomMoser mentioned the Western section, the Estates would be near there. Nice as well, not as many trees (I like trees). I'm not as enamored, but also not as familiar.
I would definitely visit. If you are working in Garden City, and with your budget, you have a number of options. Another community might be more to your liking and within a brief drive of GC. Depends on your needs and taste. It's got great schools and a good commute to NYC.

Just check the taxes. If you live in the village, you will be paying village tax in addition to town and county.
