Default Garden City

We will most likely be moving to Garden City this spring from Arizona. I have a couple of questions. First, what areas/streets are best to live in in GC. I saw a listing for a house on Pine St. Is this a family friendly, safe area? What areas should I avoid. Also, what cell phone service has the best coverage in Nassau County? I have yet to see GC or LI for that matter. My husband has been to GC a lot over the years for work and tells me I will love it. Will Long Islanders be pretty friendly to 'outsiders'? Any help or advise you can give would be greatly appreciated!

First thing we would need to know is are you buying a home and if so, what is your price range? Almost all areas of GC are very very nice, no real bad areas. Only a very few sections border a not so great area, so that is why I ask.

Pine st. is only 2 blocks away from the border of the next town, which most people are not interested in being near.

Tell us your price range and we can better guide you.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Garden City

For those who may not be familiar with Garden City:

Garden City is a village (incorporated in 1919) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the center of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Village of Mineola and the Hamlet of Carle Place, all in the Town of North Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of East Garden City; on the south by the Village of Hempstead, the Hamlet of West Hempstead, the Hamlet of Garden City South and the Hamlet of Franklin Square; and, on the west by the Village of Stewart Manor and the Village of New Hyde Park.

The Village of Garden City has a different border than does the "Garden City, NY 11530" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address and not be in the Village of Garden City and a place can be in the Village of Garden City and have other than a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address): places that have a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address that are not in the Village of Garden City are in the Hamlet of East Garden City, the Hamlet of Garden City South, the Hamlet of Franklin Square and the Village of Stewart Manor; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Garden City that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.

The Nassau County county seat is in that part of the Village of Garden City that has a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

Our price range will be roughly in the 700's to under a million. On some of the listings they mention areas like the estates or country life. I've also seen some listed saying eastern section, western section. Any areas to avoid??

Avoid any streets that border the next town called Hempstead. These are not that desirable in most people's opinions.

There are a few of us on here who can help you out. You have a great budget, which means you can afford a home in most of the desirable sections.

My wife grew up in the "Western" section (west of the GC Country Club boardering Stewart Manor). Very nice area, many young families, and less expensive then some other parts of town.

That would be the "next village, not town, called Hempstead".

Both the Village of Garden City and the Village of Hempstead, to the immediate south of the east half of the Village of Garden City, are in the Town of Hempstead.

Just make sure the property is in Garden City proper. Some realtors will steer you to Garden City Park or Garden City South, neither of which have any connection to Garden City.

In order to make sure that you're shown only properties in the Village of Garden City, specify to any real estate agent that you're only interested in houses in the Village of Garden City, then if any real estate agent shows you property that has a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address, but is not in the Village of Garden City, that real estate agent would be committing fraud (in my non-legal opinion: I'm not a lawyer).
