Lynbrook vs Hicksville vs Mineola
I grew up on LI but we have lived in nyc for a while. We are now trying to find a nice but small smarter home. We don't intend to make it our lifelong house. Most important to us is commute to NYC, Nice town/village. I know Lynbrook borders Valley Stream and have heard of crime issues. Have driven through Hicksville by the train station and was not impressed by the town and don't know much about Mineola.
Any put on which may be the best fit based on our factors? We are looking to be under 525K Thank you

Mineola is a good place. Homes are relatively affordable for that part of Nassau County. Although the homes are on smallish lots, 40 x 90 in some cases, also the homes tend to be pretty old. The schools are pretty good. The parking at Mineola train station is horrible in my opinion. Overall Mineola is still a pretty good place to live.

For commuting on the Lirr, Hicksville or Mineola are the best since the Ronkonkoma and Huntington lines stop there.. Hicksville is turing into 'Little India' with Broadway having many Indian stores opening up and people moving into the hamlet. Have not herd anything bad about Mineola. Personally id pick Lynbrook since I like the RVC south shore area but thats my personal taste.

Mineola. Good commute to NYC. Village stays on top of problems. Surrounding areas are good...Williston Park, New HYde Park, Garden city.
Lynbrook would be my 2nd choice. Sunrise Highway can bring in trouble.

I grew up in Lynbrook and my parents still live there. It's still a very nice, safe town. The commute is good, too, since there are two lines that stop there (Long Beach and Babylon).

I'd go for Lynbrook. Mineola is super central, but I don't think it's the most attractive. Double check on Mineola schools. Think part may be serviced by Herricks SD, which has a better rep. Have you looked at Carle Place? It's right next to Mineola, very small, with a cute little town center on Westbury Ave. Schools are good. I'd go there over Mineola. Always thought it was a great, under the radar community.
Hicksville is becoming very Indian, which doesn't bother me, but the fug of Rt. 106/107 and Old Country Rd. being right in the middle of everything do.

We currently live in Lynbrook so I may be a little biased, but I would agree that Lynbrook is the better choice. In terms of a commute to NYC, it's great. Plenty of starter homes although some might need updating and if you have children, the schools (SD #20) are very good. My family has been here over 40 years and it has always been a family oriented town. Yes, there are problems like you would find in any town on LI this close to the city but there are alot of really good people here who who work hard to keep it a nice, safe place to live.

Lynbrook :)
I would considering Lynbrook as your first choice. Do not worry about crime, etc. Stay in S.D. 20, we have our own police department and an overall protective community.
I'm very familiar with Hicksville and unless you're considering the Plainview/Hicksville border and Plainview schools, I would delete it from your options. Mineola would be my second.
Good Luck

Is Carle Place right next to the New Cassel area in Westbury? I've read a few posts that indiicate that area isn't so nice.

Carle Place is west of the village of Westbury. New Cassel is east.
And as with so many places on LI, a great neighborhood can be next to an iffy one. Never forget--Garden City (lovely and expensive) is right next to Hempstead. Many other examples I could give.
