Interstate 495 meets the criteria for freeway (4 lanes each direction with a concrete median separating directions of travel that has rural stretches that last for 10 miles or more)

Speed limits are a revenue grab and cottage industry for cops, local town attorneys, courts and more ponzi public employment. Ever go to traffic court and see the assembly line of separating people from their money...and the silly bargaining down of the fines?!? You don't "bargain down" safety issues. In fact, we let people drive with multiple DUIs. Speed limits were never about safety, that's a red herring and helps the rubes feel better about being fleeced. Limits were designed to reduce fuel consumption during the oil crisis of the 70's. It stayed that way because...go back to point A: MONEY GRAB!! They realized what a cash cow it is and anything they can do to cloak revenue as "safety" is a win win for those doing the fleecing.

As correct as you are, it is a bit disappointing that you broke this dude's useless rant replying to 5 year old posts... I mean talk about peeing into a fan. The limits are going nowhere, everyone knows it.

They really should get rid of all those openings in the side of the road. It is also dangerous that if I need to pull over and not see that cop hiding around the curve. Basically traffic will be peacefully flowing at 75 mph and then everyone will slam on their breaks if there is ANY car on the shoulder (about 10 abandoned ones in suffolk county)., and take their eyes off the road and look at their speedometer due to fear of getting ticketed, despite just driving normally. I doubt any of the OCD safety fanatics posting here go anywhere near 55 on that road, hypocrites.

You sound like someone who has been pulled over for driving at 75mph. If so, I say good.

It’s about time. Cars have come a long way and are a lot more sure footed than junk from the 70s and 80s.
Better chassis, abs, stability control, air bags, pre collision aids and so on.

Those who want to travel 55, right lane is all yours. And try to remember, left lane is for passing. Observe some road etiquette and all will be well.

Yes. I don't know the political _reasoning_ but there is often little logic in politics.

I do know that a limit of 55 means 65mph... at least according to our Governor. He has traditiaonlly been against speed limit increases. His "logic" is that _everyone_ goes 10mph over the limit. Thus, posting 55 means everyone will travel at least 65. Posting 65 will see everyone going 75. He has stated this in the past.

Personally, I think it is a money issue (the only logic in politics). If you post 55 and "everyone" goes 65, the police can issue tickets (and collect money) at will.

Speed limits are supposed to be set based on the 85th percentile rule. Anyone who drives knows that (outside of rush hour times) this rule is not used for NYS highways.

Just make the roads a free for all.
No more speed limits and traffic control devices.
Everyone is on their own.
You may get where you're going. Or not.
