Not sure if there are any other Vets patrolling the forum that would know, but perhaps someone with some School district "In the Loop" information could tell me if the districts will be voting on the new NY state school tax break for Vets? Sure would be nice to apply something more than STAR to my Three Village tax bill. Its bad enough Brookhaven doesn't apply it to half of the property taxes I'm billed. Thank you in advance for any helpful knowledge.

Why are you not already getting a tax break? My FIL is a vet and gets a huge reduction on their tax bill. He was wounded, and I think there are gradations depending on that but you should definitely be seeing some savings already.

OP's question is on the school tax portion of the tax bill. Veterans (wounded or otherwise) do not currently get a break on that.

New State Law announced in December (2013) permits school districts to now give a small break on the school tax portion of the tax bill to veterans. A few upstate districts have already done so.

You should call your school district's business office. They can let you know whether your school board has or is going to vote on this issue. You could go to the meeting or write a letter to the board explaining how helpful it would be for veterans to have this tax break.

However, you have to realize that whenever someone gets a tax break, someone else ends up paying more for the difference! A double-edged sword for school boards to deal with.

I receive both combat and service related disability exemptions on my nassau county property tax. They don't add up to much. Certainly not a huge reduction. semper fi to your FIL. Aren't you divorced? wouldn't he be your ex FIL?
