The DEC plans on killing and/or removing all mute swans in NY, including LI. Channel 4 finally reported on this last night.
Swans are majestic and add much beauty to our area. Seldom are they aggressive-if you stay away when they have a nest or cygnets, you should be fine.
There is NO valid reason for this plan.
Please go to Change.org and sign the petition there against this. Contact the DEC directly or email them and let them know you are opposed to this.
I hope people care.

You can DM me for the link to the petition (don't know if I am allowed to put it here) and the petition will also provide the email address to the DEC.

Moderator cut: You may put the link in.

Put the link in. No reason you can't.

I can't believe this is even a thought in anyone's mind.

You forgot to mention that they are an invasive species that are destroying habitats.

Screw the swans. Kill them all.

They are no longer considered invasive being they have been here since the 1800's and there have been no issues. Go find another thread to be nasty on.

Aren't humans a pretty invasive species? I hardly believe mute swans pose a risk great enough to warrant such inhumanity. Which habitat are they destroying?

I don't have a problem with what the DEC is doing. They are an invasive species (they were brought to North America in the 1800s, but have only relocated to NY more recently). They destroy vegetation and are aggressive to people and other waterfowl.

They add nothing to the ecosystem and instead are destroying it.

I would also be for eliminating the Canadian Goose population, but that will never happen.

I support proper wildlife management, but this plan is ludicrous. Mute Swan population in NYS is approximately 2, 500. Not tens or hundreds of thousands like Canadian Geese, which are native.

The state DEC website does NOT list mute swans as a nuisance or invasive species, despite their being non native. ( Having problems linking from my tablet.) Go to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation look under animals.

Mute swans are aggressive (especially when young are present), rip up aquatic plants that support pond health which in turn is changing pond chemistry (diminished oxygen, loss of fish.) Mute swans will destroy other birds nests and eggs, which can be good or bad. If they're destroying Canadian Geese eggs -- good.

I believe the DEC is playing a BS card when citing swans for air strikes with planes. Given the small population (2, 500) and the overabundance of geese, who is the likely culprit?

We are up to our necks in Canadian Geese, many of which are no longer migratory. Kind hearts are feeding them, unaware of the trickle down problems they're causing. The fecal matter and bread in ponds is creating the same problems that mute swans ripping up plants are.
